This is my first time trying to back order a domain. Any suggestions on who is the best to use, and how do they determine who gets the name if multiple people backorder the name with the same registrar?

don't use godaddy.

If you really want the name, use snap.com, clubdrop.com, and pool.com

Otherwise just use one of the above, i suggest clubdrop.com

Depends what's the name worth to you and to the others. GD backorder could be OK for some name that is just special to you, and you know it for sure.. (and you can live with the fact that you CAN loose it)

Enom would be the best option, open a free reseller acount before you order a name, so you don't pay their retail prices.
