Ive never back ordered domains before so I would like to know a few things first.

What happens if a few people backorder the same domain? Will the first person who back ordered it receive it? And if someone does get it, will I get my money back so I can backorder another? Or will it be lost?

Also were is the best place to backorder domains?

GoDaddyGoDaddy
when you don't get the name, you can switch to some other names, you usually
don't get money back.

If you use snapnames, you are not charged, but that is not called "backorder"

Yes, they will put a backorder credit in your account.

To grab a domain you should place a backorder with Snapnames, Pool and Enom.
You pay nothing upfront, they will charge your credit card only if they catch the domain.
The gotcha is that other people may have backordered the same domain so you will enter a private auction with these people who will bid against you. The highest bidder gets the name.
With godaddy they rarely catch valuable domains so you will get stuck with useless account credit. For .us however they seem to be good.

I found a domain and I don't think it would be that popular as its the name of my hometown. Should I just go with godaddy? If would be the end of the world if I didnt get it, but it would be nice to have a develop.

Don't go with GoDaddy, unless it is a .US domain. Go with Snapnames, Pool and Enom.

As you said it is not competitive, you can try registering it yourself by knowing when it drops. This Thread tells you the right time:

Good Luck!

Yes, you can pick up really good names.

You just have to expect to going to auction against several other people.

The better the domain, the stronger the competition.

I just used the GoDaddy backordering service to grab an expiring .com for me, and it worked just fine. I got the domain name - a nice one, but a non-English name so there probably wasn't that much competition at this moment, although I'm a bit surprised it was dropped in the first place. I'm going to develop!

cheers
Josh
