What is the difference between a link and a backlink

I am trying to develop a site and its got about 10 links but google does not rate it

If I have 2 web site and the have link to each other, are they back links?

and what is a "link:url"

I think I am missing some thing

A backlink is a site linking to you. A link could be you linking to another site or them linking to you. You can have one website and link to the other but if they are on the same IP and Google PR is what you're looking for it won't happen.

All links point to your site are Inbound Links. Backlinks are what Google reports with it's tool bar.

Google only reports inbound links with a PR of 4 or greater as backlinks but you may find the occasional PR3 reported.

But normally the term 'backlinks' is used for all inbound links and there is no difference between them except the PR value and that explains the different results you get depending on what search method you use.

links are somewhat related to as hyperlinks while backlinks are links that pointing to your site. In short, a backlink is also called as a vote cast from other site to yours..

a nice article here about inbound links...

I think i understand now

is it a link that has a value or ranking and needs to be relevant to your site name/description

quote from sedo
"Page Rank:
The Google PageRankrefers to the number and weighting of links from other websites. Google considers the more websites that refer (link) to another website / domain, the more relevant that domain must be to a certain topic. However, it is not just the amount, or volume of links that is important โ€“ the quality of those links is also relevant. For example, if you have a link from website โ€œUโ€ which has a Google PageRank of 8, this will be ranked much higher than if you have four links from four different websites, โ€œWโ€,โ€œXโ€, โ€œYโ€, โ€œZโ€, all with Google PageRanks of 3. The scale goes from 1-10, the higher the ranking the better."

Thanks

Steve
