Hi

regarding DNjournal, and their weekly reported sales charts...how long does the average domain sit in the sale site before selling?

i know this may be an ambiguous question, but just wondering

This is a difficult question to answer, primarily because there are different type of sales and different sales agendas. For instance, someone could have a highly desireable name, that if put up for sale at a reasonable price, would sell instantly. While, others may have a name that only makes sense for a certain company.

Ive found that some domains can sit on the shelves for several years before attracting the right buyer, and Ive also had domains that have sold within hours of acquisition. I dont think there is any clear defining timeframe on how long it takes to sell a domain name.

Interesting question! My wife is a Realtor, and the time on market is vital information in that business. Among other things the time on market info points out the sellers that are delusional in their pricing. In real estate this is easy to do since most people still use MLS services which makes it easy to track. There is no such comparable facility in domaining in which to track the data. That means it is solely up to the seller in domaining to give honest figures, and we all know how that goes.

The market dynamics is the same though, and protracted time on market for domains should be a good sign that the pricing is delusional. IMHO, delusional pricing is the rule rather than the exception in domaining.

There are just way to many variables that play into that. Here's a short list:

Price
Where you posted it at
How premium the domain is
How much exposure you are getting with it
Traffic
Finding the right person

It could take years, or days - depending on who wants the domain, and how much they are willing to pay for it.
