Average hold time before resale?

SpaceshipSpaceship
Watch
I was reading an article the other day from a domainer who bought several domain names last year and has flipped them a year later for outstanding ROI. On a hundred dollar investment - 3000+

And it got me thinking that domains I bought almost a year ago, are recieving more and more interest. What is the average hold time for a domain to mature?

Considering Ive gotten into the industry more and more in the last year and built up what I consider to be a sizeable portfolio (couple hundred), Ive had to start considering when is it time to start offloading?

Your thoughts?

It really depends on the domain itself in my opinion.

Time to start offloading.

My opinion is that most people don't want to pay renewal fees within 3 months after buying a domain. Therefore if the name is not outstanding, you have a high chance of receiving a lower sale price in the last 3 months of registering a domain. Once you've held a domain for more than 7 months, you should have a good idea about whether you consider it worth renewing or not and need to move quickly to get good prices for those you don't want to renew.

For me, I consider that I have better skills at finding names than 12 months ago and so there are some names that I bought then that I wouldn't rush to renew today. However the past year has been a good year for domains and so a good percentage of the names that I do have are hard to replace with better names at renewal fee prices. I think the best time to start offloading is when you need the money.

A real estate guide I once read recommended to aim keep property at least 7 years. We are still in the 1st generation of domains and so the growth rate of domains as assets is still very fast. I tend to think that a lot of domains require between 3-7 years to get a good price. Considering that Sedo is less than 7 years old, this industry still requires huge amounts of growth.

Currently my principal is hold my Domains for at least 2 years if no targeted offer recieved (Means renew it once)

My understanding is that when you buy a domain, you should plan to hold on them for many, many years. Why? If is ok domain this year, it will be good domain next year, and be better domain yet another year. If you are not sure about this, then you should not register the domain in the first place.

If you mean selling to endusers the industry average is around 17-50 years, depending on quality largely. That is based on the statistic that the larger domain sellers such as buydomains, fabulousdomains and dotcomagency typically sell between 1-3% of their holdings each year.

I have better skills at finding names than before, but now names are harder to replace with better names and also the minisites start to have natural traffic, it never seem to be a good time to
unload.

But do they sell off 1-3% of their holdings because thats controlled? or is that all they CAN sell every year?

That is all they are able to sell, but these companies are pricing for enduser buyers.

List them forsale when you get them. You never know when the right buyer will come along. ;)

In my opinion you can't place an average as each domain is a case on it's own.

This is the best advice.

Some people buy domains to keep, some people buy domains to flip.

If your case is To Keep, than you should sell them only when a dream offer come along. Otherwise, keep it, develop it, improve it and monetize.

If your case is To Flip, use the first six months to promote it, including via backlinks and PR, and when it is about 6 months to renew, sell it.

Even though we never know what can happen in between...

Average time was the original question, I believe - and that is difficult as every domain that I have yet to sell increases my hold time day by day, and could stretch out for 100 years more, or merely the next moment.
Domains that I have sold have been held for 5 months on average - usually because the names are good enough that the interest level is high. Also, many names that I buy at Snap or elsewhere aftermarket (grrr...) I have an end-user in mind when I buy, and I've had decent success going straight to the end user (Meaning a very low hold time/carrying cost - which by the way, I read the comment the other day that since the particular owner did not buy on credit, but instead used cash (Thereby avoiding finance charges) that they had no "holding cost" - I submit that there is always a holding cost, even if it is simply an "opportunity" cost.)

I have sold domains in a week and others I have held for years, it depends on the domain and how much interest or offers it receives and also what type of seller you are, some sellers are happy flipping domains they bought for $6 for $100 where others have no problem sitting on them waiting until they find that perfect end user buyer or waiting until that perfect end user buyer comes looking for their domain.
