Hello friends,

I am very new to domain name aftermarket and would all like to get your expert opinion. A friend of mine pointed me to leapfish.com in order to appraise a domain. I like it because I just type in a domain and in seconds it gives back an estimated value for the domain.

My question is, are the estimations for domain prices any where near accurate?

Also, are there other sites that do this so that I can do some compare/contrasting on appraisals?

Or any other options that will be better to appraise the value of a domain?

Thank you very much for all your help.

Not really. A domain is more difficult to appraise than a house and there are quite a few factors involved. I don't think the computer can replace a human being when in-depth judgement is involved. Even human advice will vary a lot depending on whom you ask.
Still the computer can be useful for performing analysis, extracting keywords, searching overture etc ie determining objective factors that will influence the final appraisal price. There are a lot of subjective details that come into play too, that's why the human touch is needed.
Also if you look at some automated appraisals like godaddy or else you will notice that the quote is somewhat arbitrary and no methodology is outlined. It's safe to assume they will want to make you happy and quote high so you will register more domains with them. Pump and dump ?

Um, not really

There a simply too many factors for a program to even give an estimate of a domains worth.
A domain is only worth what someones willing to pay for it, nothing more, nothing less.

For a domain appraisal software to be even close, it would have to have a degree of intelligence.

They speak the truth. When I first put up one of my domains for sale all4u.com, I asked $11,000 for it. I asked that amount, simply because that is the exact amount I need for something else.

However since then, I have had a few people tell me I seriously under priced the domain and that I should be asking "way more".

I googled myself around and did some of those automated appraisals that you are asking about and in one case (as shown below) it estimated the value of that domain at over $300k.
