Hey all,

Just had a look through a lot of nice available .com.au domain names. Obviously they're very developable, but I'm concerned by the lack of advertising programs available in Australia (and ads should be local for a .com.au site).

Personally, I don't think .com.au's have much value unless they're of premium quality, mainly due to the fact that there are so many good domains still available. What do you think? Is Australia an untapped domain market? The UK domain scene is huge right now, who's to say the Aussies won't follow suit? In 2-3 years will we all be kicking ourselves for not picking up some of the beauties that are available.

If anyone would be interested, I might do a .com.au special on my Available Domains Blog tomorrow. Let me know what you think!

Joe.

As far as I know to get a .com.au you must have an Australian registered business name that corresponds to the domain or something closely related.

They should have just .au, it would make life easier

.COM.AU is a fairly good extension, but only if you have a website specific to Australia, and plan to brand and promote mostly to people in that country. If this is your situation, and you find a good domain, my recommendation would be to go for it.

I don't think .com.au domains have much resale potential yet, but that could always change in the future.

Don't even think about buying AUSTRALIAN NAMES

Now I have your attention

aUDA Rules and regulations governing the usage of .au ccTLDs'
don't actually allow the ownership of any domain name

Legal entities that qualify are only allowed to licence the use of the name for a period of 2 years

Domain Name speculation is prohibited and any names attempted to be listed for sale, trading or sub-leasing will be cancelled by the aUDA
Charges for breaking the terms of the licence agreement have been succesfull

.com.au ,.net.au can be Licensed by any Australian Business or Sole trader with a valid Australian Business or Company number
ABN's are free to all qualifying entities
(FYI my ABN 3650 7512118)
ACN's are issued to all registered and incorporated Businesses.
(FYI "Bare Foot Tech" is BN 98075322)

.org.au Is for Organisations only
.asn.au Is for Associations registered with with ATO

.id.au is for personal use only (Must be the person's name or NickName)
(Yes my nickName is Registered as "Vista" for my Vista.id.au)

the following are restricted or currently not available
.edu.au
.gov.au
.conf.au

aUDA.org.au Has more Details on .au ccTLD's
ATO.Gov.au Has information about the legal entities allowed to hold ACN or ABN
Any registrar or reseller found selling .au ccTLD's to non-qualifying entities face losing their accreditation to license them.
(And no there is no legal Proxy methods to get around these rules )

The owner of sport.com.au lost it a few years back when he offered it for sale on eBay.
