i suggest having some kind of splash page that people have to read and agree to prior to entering the live auction chatroom. on the splash page would be faq and answers and auction guidelines, whether auctions are in usd or np$, etc. every auction has its noobs (which you cant really help), and the more seasoned members start getting annoyed (which they cant really help either).

perhaps np can implement some kind of "auction test" based on auction rules and protocol, that people have to pass in order to enter the live auction room.

:?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

A splashscreen would be a nice idea, it would stop a lot of "scroll down" spam too :'( :hehe:

I think we still would need the info at the bottom to refresh peoples memories as to the guidelines.

Maybe have something you have to agree to before entering (Having to check multiple checkboxes which say things like "I will not do X during the auction" and so on).

what about an option for people only to view bids and the auctioneers speech. It would take a lot of editting but the idea is that there is a bid button under the send button in the chat window, for bidding only. and people can set their options to only view whats sent through the bid button, and the administrator userlevels speech. That can stop the more experienced members having to deal with the kids all the time.

In my opinion there should just be a 3 strike system, if you blatantly don't read the rules below the chat window three times your kicked from the auction.

Only problem with that is its all Java, you would need to find someone who is very good at java.

Well, chat.php shows the rooms avail and the chatroom is now chat2.php

What about having the rules in a text box and users must scroll down to the bottom of it to tick a box confirming they have read and agree to the rules?

It would be far too much work.

Chat Admins could ofcourse use the moderator plugin to reduce chat during auctions.

Though chat during auctions does seem to die down after 1 or 2 minutes.

Not a bad suggestion though. :tu:

Joseph, nice idea.
It wouldn't be too hard to do with a bit of Javascript either. :tu:

Edit: I have some freetime, so i made this...as a example. :tu:
Hope you don't mind i used NP Design. :)

Example, http://dreamit.co.uk/chat.html

Edit 2:Maybe add a option in the Options page in the UserCP, which says "I agree to the chat rules", and have the rules listed.
This way, they won't have to accept them before joining all the time...just a simple check on chat.php to check if they have accepted, would be very easy! :)

hitch, it's a good start. but i think it would be better with a more clear cut layout instead of looking like a TOS (which no one ever reads... at least i dont, lol).

ie,

Rule 1: blahblahblah
Rule 2: blahblahblah
Rule 3: blahblahblah
...

and possibly have a checkbox for every rule

agreed, they should keep it at the bottom as well, but they should also get people to at least glance over the faq at least once before entering the live auction. so to ensure that they read it over before entering, there will need to be some sort of splash screen. the alternative is to paste the rules above the chat area, but that's ugly, lol.

Alternatively, a javascript overlay on the chatroom with the rules and the box only goes away when you type a sentence into the box like "I agree to follow the NamePros auction rules"

You can't edit the actual Java Applet because it is complied. So you would need to get them to provide source which they wouldn't do or reverse engineer it which RJ wouldn't do.

So we would need to have this happen using PHP before they entered the chatroom.

RJ already put up a splash and a small mod can make it so when there is a auction it will display rules in a text box which a checkbox for I agree and than just send them to auction.
