If you had the chance to learn either one of these languages what would it be?

PHP... end of story. .net is only useful if you need to use API's and such. PHP is faster, more secure, etc. As you can tell I am biased with PHP.

Sorry, but you're completely wrong and clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Php is not more secure, and it is not faster. Both ASP.NET and PHP have had security vulnerabilities, however to say that one is more secure or faster than the other is an ignorant statement. I dare you to find non-biased evidence and post it here.

Please do plenty of reading before deciding on something like this, as you'll no doubt encounter ignorant, fanboy responses for both sides of the argument.

I use .NET because i love visual studio as an IDE, I like strongly typed, compiled languages (php is a scripting language, so it's interpreted at runtime), and i find it a lot easier to manage large projects.

I began my web development career with php, and still use it from time to time, mostly because it does have probably the largest user base and amount of resources.

As I see it, here are some pros and cons:

PHP Pros:
- free
- cheap hosting
- lots of support and open source projects

PHP Cons:
- hard to manage large projects (when people start including files in random places, it can sometimes be excruciating finding/managing things unless you're intimately familiar with the code already)
- not compiled

ASP.NET Pros
- very easy management of large projects with visual studio
- good documentation and support via forums (granted, not as much as php)
- great for OOP and following other good coding practices

ASP.NET Cons
- hosting is not as cheap as php
- there are not as many open source projects, so instead of copying things, you'll have to actually write your own code more often

Good luck with your decision

HINT - Notice that NP does not have a .NET section. NP is a great community and if you plan on using the support network here then choice is clear. PHP
Thats becuase .net programmers read the manuals, and dont have to post every little question about formatting a string on a forum, because they know the basics of programming already.

In response to the original poster, I'm going to go against the grain and for the sake of argument say .NET for the win. Learn a real language first. PHP never was intended to be more than a web hit counter script, but then evolved, thus limiting its functionality and since of being an actual language.

Not saying PHP is bad.. but if you want to expand your options and not just make websites that display apache variables and connect to mysql, learn a real language. And no I'm not saying php is fake, but learn something that is intended to be an object oriented language.

.NET can also run on linux dispite popular belief, and gives you the option of what programming language you want to use. So if you'd like to learn C#, F#, C++, VB, Java, Python, or more, I'd go with .net and get your choice of what you'd like to use to make your website.

Don't get me wrong, I love PHP and use it each day. But I'm just doing silly blog and forum type stuff. Nothing revolutionary... yet ;)

I am on the same page here. I use PHP for my personal sites, forums, blogs and such, because it is cheap. My greatest work, both career, and my more involved personal projects have all been done in .Net The development tools for .Net blow away other languages in my mind. But that is my opion again.

since ASP has already digivolved to .NET then I am going to throw in another one - Java. Not that I would be using it for web development, but it is another great language that can be used for pretty much anything on pretty much anything.

For me it's asp.net. The biggest reason is OOP. Although php 5 supports OOP it's not as easy mainly because of IDE. Visual Studio is really the best IDE out there. Unfortunately php doesn't have anything near close to Visual Studio.

I've tried them all.
Eclipse? There is PHP version also available: http://www.eclipse.org/pdt/
