.ART for Art’s sake? New debates with New gTLDs…
It seems nothing escapes controversy these days, and the new gTLDs are no exception. Ever since ICANN announced it was accepting applications for new TLDs, there’s been speculation and concern about who would control certain domains and what it means to develop and administer a domain.
One such controversy concerns the .art extension, for which twelve applicants are applying. Whatever applicant gets administration rights over the new TLD takes on the responsibility of controlling the extension, and that applicant will determine their own guidelines for distributing .art (so long as their guidelines are not abusing, or monopolizing), including how inclusive or exclusive the gTLD will be. And for some in the art community, therein lies the problem.
