i have seen over the past few months more newcomers in the forum- and we welcome you with open arms!

but there are things you should learn/read, before you dive in and take the plunge. most of us have been with .tv for years, others for much longer, and there really is a wealth of information for you to learn from before you start investing in .tv.

most here have regged some bad names over time, but have generally learned and gotten a finer grasp of the extension, what it is and what it can do.

all domains are not created equal, and .tv has its place and its use. i have seen some names being posted for appraisal that just were not good regges- and when you dive into something without doing your homework first- you might end up getting discouraged.

imagine it is kinda like buying a store front on miami beach, and realizing there is no ice cream shop for miles. you KNOW the potential is there to make a great deal of money over time- you KNOW an ice cream shop would be a hit- BUT, if you decide to offer up to your clients flavors like Beets-n-Cream, Onion Delight and Plum Pickle Pudding- well no matter how much people want ice cream, they are not going to buy YOUR ice cream.

.tv is a bit more particular. first and foremost, it is a media based domain. for the most part, if it ends in .tv, people are going to expect just that- video, live streaming tv, ect... you have to keep that in mind before you reg.

can the name be used readily with video?
is there enough video out there for fresh content, or can i supply that video if developing?
can i even utilize video in a way that make sense? like with products- can the site be used as a showcase site, utilizing video based commercial type clips for that product or service?
does the name offer up to a broad market and have wide appeal? tattoos.tv- wide appeal. PinkyToePiercing.tv- much much smaller appeal. not that it would not work if there is some sort of market for it, just be prepared for a longer sell time.

now, there may be something that has a huge "usage"- i am looking in the appraisal area now and see a name that in itself, as a phrase, is a commonly used term for sure. but it makes no sense with .tv. i cant inagine any sort of video that would mesh with it- and i am one of the artsy thinkers on the forum- some of my names are out there- but i have a video plan for each of them that makes sense for its usage.

.tv is not like .ws or .cc or .biz where you can just stick any term there. it must relate to the media aspect. and not everything is not on video, and somethings... well people just dont want to see on video :)

keep in mind that .tv, altho around for quite some time- more or less experienced a rebirth in 2006. before then, the web was not even up to speed with what .tv stood for. and it is only getting there now. so, like with anything that is growing- you need some patience. .tv is "hot" in the sense that is on a steady solid upward course.

no big spikes on its charts, then flatlined. just a nice slow steady growth.

if you are looking to sell at .com sales levels, then by golly, buy a .com :) .tv is not trying to pretend to be .com, or even compete with .com- but to simply co-exists with it in its own niche. it just so happens that the niche is freakin huge and just happens to be global.

Bike.tv will not sell for what Bike.com will. NewYork.tv will not sell for what NewYork.com will. now, you will make some nice flow off those, but dont make the common newbie mistake of: i got a great keyword, so it is gonna sell HUGE. everything is relavent to scale.

now, what is .tv doing- and why your neighbor does not know what .tv is, yet.
simply, it is following a course. a course that has repeated itself in history over and over. let me give you an example-
lets take moshing.
moshing can actually be traced back to the 70's. but, very few knew of it. it was popular in its own circles- the punk niche.
it wasnt until the 80's that it became more known- spilling over into the mainstream.
this has happened over and over in history with different things.

and .tv is no different. ask your neighbor who may say dot what? but ask almost any hardcore internet video enthusiast. yes, they may mention youtube.com or brightcove.com- but they may also mention lulu.tv or beet.tv. see, right now, .tv is in that inner circle thing, growing from the inside out. and that is the very very most important part of .tv- it is creating a solid core, within the very group that understands it- and is building outward from that.

so, spend time reading and re-reading this sub-forum. read for days and days. there is invaluable information here for you to learn from, and to help you be successful in .tv.
cheers!

my one and only piece of advice: If you are going to reg something, consider looking in the aftermarket first. It takes 10 seconds to search, and you may find something much more valuable.

Ok, one more piece of advice: NO ONE expects the Spanish inquisition!

excellent ponts dottie...they are all very good tips to new domainers in .tv and people that have been here for a few months.

my only advice is that bigger is not better...pick high quality domains vs buying hundreds of names and getting into the hype of .tv...that was my biggest mistake...you can only develope so many names, flipping names is tough..

good luck to the newbies and welcome to .tv forum! Its a great group of people here and got to know of you over the 11 months..

I been buying .tv since 2000 and but I have learned more in 1 year since joining namespros than I did in the previous 7 years making too many mistakes and losing lot's of money. No matter what experience we have here we can learn so much from this great group.
