Nominet replied to me immediately when I queried them about registering some .uk domains. They stated that until 2018, existing .co.uk registrants have first right of refusal to come forward and register, after that time it appears anyone can register xxxxxx.uk, so for one word domains currently in co.uk now, we need to wait.
