Are subnets an important factor?

I read somewhere (forgot the source) that it is an advantage to have back links from different subnets as opposed to have back links from sites hosted on the same subnet. From the perspective of the search engines it seems like a logic factor to consider.

Can anyone clarify the importance of this factor and whatever or not it can be an advantage to spread websites over a number of hosts.

Comments are appreciated!

No comments? It seems like people consider domain aging important so would be great to get some input on this related technical SEO factor!
