Are pixel sites profitable?

I was wondering how pixel sites due from pixel sales?

I am thinking about starting one but want to know if they are worth your time first.

Your not going to make any money unless your idea is unique from other pixel sites.

You probably wont make any money off a pixel site. The hype is gone and the fad is over, you may get the odd random buyer but unless you put a lot of work into it, you wont make money. There are literally tens of thousands of these websites now, what would make yours special?

The Market is flooded with them. Although once you get solid traffic and about a quarter of your pixels taken you'll see the rest sell out very quickly.

Agreed, but some people do keep coming up with good ideas for them

Don't have the link for the article right now, but the idea was that all pixel adverts sold on the Website, would also get an equivalent place on this building!

Well I would say I would doubt that any sort of pixel site would be profitable....because the idea was unique, but it isn't anymore.

The original site was the best, the other ones really don't get paid any attention to them.

I would suggest trying to find some sort of unique idea that isn't already there.

Seen some sites giving pixels away for donations, not so many lately, maybe it seems too dated already

It was dated after the first one was done :P

There was one and it was a massive success, thats about it. I wouldn't try getting in on the field.

I'm not one to be discouraging, especially with ones ideas, but pixel sites seem to have come and gone with the fad. Whenever I look at stats on pixel sites I've noticed a surge in traffic for each site around Mar 2005, and then dropped shortly after. Kinda looks like a ghost town on some of them.

However, maybe an idea would be to do smaller adverts on your site that would be pixel ads. IE: have a 120 x 60 skyscraper pixel ad and charge for real estate that way. That might work.
