A list of newly registered domains can provide important insights for different types of organizations. For instance, commercial enterprises can use it to strengthen their cybersecurity resilience by detecting potentially suspicious domains. They can also use a newly registered domains database to make more informed and relevant market analyses.

The latter is closely related to what domain name investors can do with a list of newly registered domains. Domainers can see domain registration trends that can help make their portfolios more lucrative.

Top 5 Domain Registration Trends in April 2021
A 10,000 domain sample from our newly registered domains database for April 2021 enabled us to detect some worthwhile trends discussed in more detail below.

.com Is Still King
While there are already more than 1,500 top-level domains (TLDs), people still prefer .com, one of the oldest TLDs. About 43% of the newly registered domains created in April 2021 were under the said TLD. The rest of the domains are distributed across 337 other TLDs.

We listed the top 10 TLDs in the table below. Note, however, that most of the TLDs are country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) while a couple are internationalized ones.

This trend shows that .com domain names are still probably the most common investments made. Domains under certain ccTLDs are also frequently registered as people may, for example, set up local enterprises amid travel restrictions brought about by the pandemic.

Internationalized Domain Names
In line with the trend in ccTLDs that hint at people going local, the list of newly registered domains also contains several internationalized domain names (IDNs) as shown in the screenshot below. These begin with “xn--.”

IDNs could be more preferred in non-English-speaking countries whose residents would have better recall of IDNs. Domain name investors could try adding IDNs to their domain portfolios as well.

Finance-Related Domains
Domain names related to the financial sector abound in the newly registered domains database, too. These include domains that contain these words:
  • “coin”
  • “crypto”
  • “invest”
  • “bank”
  • “finan”
  • “bet”
With the growing interest in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, adding crypto-related domains to domain portfolios could be worthwhile. These types of domains are among the most expensive in the market. The domain cleanenergybitcoin[.]com, for instance, is priced at US$7.7 million on Sedo.

E-Commerce Domains
More businesses are going online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has fueled the growth of the e-commerce industry. This trend is also reflected in the list of newly registered domains, which featured thousands of domains that contain the words “store,” “online,” “brand,” and “shop.” A few examples are shown in the screenshot below.

These types of domain names are pretty sought after, too. The domain onlineshop[.]com, for example, has 463 bids and is being priced at US$500,000.

Blogging and News Domains

Domains that are suitable for hosting blogs and news are staples in domain investing, and they are among those that stood out in April 2021. Some domains feature a person’s name, along with the word “blog,” such as blog-kateliecompose[.]com[.]br and mattblogtest[.]com.

Others are more generic, which can be bought by any domain name investor. For example, the newly registered domains database contained propertyblogclub[.]com and genralblognews[.]com.

On the other hand, news-related domain names are more location-specific, such as pakistancompanynews[.]vg, newslivingprague[.]com, and kabutarnews[.]in.

WhoisXML API’s Newly Registered Domains Database can be useful to find out what types of domains were primarily registered in April. The key takeaways here are:
  • .com is still king, but domainers can explore ccTLDs and IDNs as well.
  • Finance- and crypto-related domain names can be very pricey.
  • E-commerce domains are worth exploring, as more entities go online.
  • Generic news and blog sites could be worth exploring, too.
WhoisXML API has been gathering, parsing, and analyzing IP, domain, and DNS data for more than a decade now, making its databases extensive.
