Since everybody wants to know howmuch they should pay for a domain or what to ask for a domain i'll post a quick and easy guide how to determine if a domain is worth buying/registering/selling.
First we come to the sources i use. I'll explain the sources step by step.
Google:
Google CAN (does not always) give you an idea if your keyword(s) or term is commonly used on the internet.
Example: let's say we got our eye on "planetearth.com". In the google search box type in "planet earth" and hit that search button. NEVER forget on a two word search to use quotes (type in "planet earth" with quotes and not -planet earth- without the quotes). If you use the quotes you tell google that the words have to be in the specific order as you typed them. "Planet earth" with quotes gives you 2,430,000 results wich is good. If you use it without quotes it gives you 115,000,000 results but these results are not very accurate to see how popular your keywords or term is on the internet because google will now give you all the results without the specific order so might end up with results that have planet in the begin on the page and earth at the end wich is not very accurate to determine if your keywords/term is popular.
If you have a domain with a ccTLD try to search for your keywords/term in that specific country. For example if you need to determine if planetearth.in has good results goto Google.in and search the pages in India.
You can also use google to determine if websites are linking to the domain if the domain already was registered. Type "link : planetearth.com" (without the quotes and spaces and you'll see that 8 websites are linking to planetearth.com
The results on google are not very accurate on some terms though. You have to think "logically" on how to use those results. For example if you got your eye on a first name domain, for example "Jona" you'll see that google returns 5,000,000 results wich seems alot but for a first name this is very bad meaning the name isn't very popular.
This is mainly what i use google for.
Keyword Selector Tool
To see if alot of people are searching for your keyword(s) or term i use a keyword selector tool located at http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/
If people do alot of searches/day on your term or keyword(s) you could expect type-ins if you have the .com. NOTE: this applies only for .com .info .net TLDs, if you have ccTLD domains think logical!
Wich is alot? Depends on the term/keyword(s). I usually don't go for anything in the .com .net .info area if it doesn't have 5000 searches/month or more.
You can also see if people are searching for your domain itself. For example try to determine is people are seaching for "planet earth com". If they do (even if it is only 10 seacrhes/month) you hit a small jackpot
Note: this tool give you the searches/day, multiply it by 30.
Archive.org
I use archive.org alot to see if the domain has had a website in the past. It's simple, type in the full domain in the box and see if it has had registered pages. If the domain goed back it ads to the value.
Namebio.com
Great site to see if the term/keyword(s) has had sales in the past in any TLD or ccTLD. I use it mainly to see if related domains have had sales and to see howmuch it was sold for.
Estibot.com
I DON'T use Estibot to give me an accurate value because i think it's not there yet but it's comming along good. I use it to see the terms/keywords(s) PPC add score. I also think Estibot is great because it can give you alot of info on a domain on one simple page.
Now, this is about all i use to give me an idea of my domain. I know this still can't give you an exact figure on your domain but it gives you an idea wether it's worth it or not, it gives you an idea wether it's worth xx, xxx or even x,xxx.
Note: this determines if your domain could be good for resellers, for an end-user this is totally different!! An end-user might give thousands for a domain that doesn't have any good results in the methods i explained above.
It's basicly all LOGICAL thinking.
Well, i hope this small guide gets you on your way.
