Hi everyone;

I am trying to sell drop.io

If some of you may recall, drop.io was a pioneer file sharing service. Facebook acquired the technology in 2010 and shut down the service.

Moz DA: 65, Alexa: 388K, unique humans: ~30-40K a month, from incoming links all over the web (not from Google).

Clean past (no spam issues, google delistings etc etc).

Domain only, no website.

I'd be interested in the opinion of this forum.

Thanks!
Gabriel

clearly huge potential to resell to some tech startup who can by purchasing your domain get huge amount of monthly traffic for free.

About 30-40K unique humans a month, coming from various websites, some of them high authority and some just links to has been files that were stored on drop.io in the past. Search engine traffic is very low.

I've been thinking about listing on sedo but got their automatic valuation of about $1K once I started to list, which is a joke.. I may list it there and just ignore their valuation but I'd still like to get more estimates. I got much much higher estimates at some other places.

It's worth xxx

You cannot bring previous use and subsequent traffic into play. The numbers will slowly diminish over time.

You have a single word .io which will sell accordingly.

Thanks for the estimate :) If that is the case then I'll just keep it, if traffic doesn't play a role in estimation then I can theoretically sell it in a few years once the traffic dies all the same.

I've managed some affiliate income from the traffic, nothing to write home about but definitely rivals a value of less than $1K.

have you tried parking it with bodis or voodo?

Sedo automatic valuation is not relevant in this case, so you can ignore it. Value of this domain will derive from your ability of find a link between potential usages of drop.io, and huge numbers of previous back links which drives traffic to drop.io.

So the question is, what drop.io can be used for? And can this somehow be linked to previous activities this domain was used for, which was file sharing service?

I think back links are very valuable for domain value, and I do not really agree with opinion that you cannot bring previous use and subsequent traffic into play. It is true that those numbers will slowly diminish over time, but until it is completely diminished, it can bring hundreds of thousand of people to that site for free! So if you can find the link, you can then find also right end user who can happily pay lot of money to get the domain.

I personally can not at the moment find the link between keyword "drop" and file sharing service but maybe some other members here are more creative :)

^ I agree, I would simply need to try to specifically find buyers who can benefit from the tech related backlinks or at least specify that this is the domain's strength if I put it for sale.

Redirecting visitors to cloud hosting or web hosting etc. as an affiliate really doesn't yield much. I mean, if the pure name is valued at less than $1K then it definitely tops that over a period of a few months, but it's not the smart way to go.

I'll try to see what parking yields, I parked a few domains with sedo a while ago but I simply don't remember if drop.io was among them at the time, so I'll try that again with better parking services as was suggested by Jman92 earlier.
