Anyone here use Second Life?
Was your first day fun??
Have any technical trouble???

They lose over 80% of the people who sign up!...

but...

still manage to make almost a $1,000,000 USD a day!!! :-/

`````````
* I'm currently trapped on Orientation Island, and every attempt to teleport results in getting logged off.
* Has anyone here had similar problems??
* The wealthy company who runs Second Life does not offer ANY support help response to basic (free) members.
Check out this pitiful e-mail response (not-automated, signed by a real person)
We have solved your issue.
Solution: Hi there,
Thanks for contacting us about this issue.
As a Basic Account Holder, you are not entitled to this level of support through the ticket system. This support is currently only offered to Premium account holders....
What a joke!
They "solved my issue" by letting me know they won't be helping. :td:
1) What actually draws so many people to SL?
Being able to fly is fun :)
but...
some people go there for virtual sex, and that seems pretty creepy and lame to me. D-:
So, What actually draws so many people to SL?
2) Anyone doing business there and making any money?
What type of business??
It might be fun, and it is also easy to see why they lose so many newbies.
Yesterday I actually signed up and spent 30 minutes attempting to login but was always denied. Attempts for "forgotten password" repeatedly stated my name wasn't correct but it was...had it stated in the email to activate. So I signed up again...screw it. Again..I was denied a login for a different reason.
Seems that second-life doesn't care about obtaining new members.
Just yesterday?
Same day I signed up...
``````

I had to waste hours only to end up stranded on Orientation Island. :'(
Not sure what's up with your password, but if you get an error message about 'DNS can't resolve', the solution is to temporarily turn off your firewall (just while logging in)

Then you can fly :wave:

I tried SL a long time ago...just didn't see the point. Now if they added PvP... ^_^

Tried it for a day or so, then gave up. Pointless. Although I guess if I had gotten in early and had the right ideas I could be raking in some pretty big bucks right now, and that seems hilarious to me that these people are making thousands of dollars in a virtual world.

I played everything, starting with UO in 1997 to WoW to Planet Entropia (Entropia Universe) and everything reputable in between. I tried SL right after its initial release, it was a catastrophe back then and it was the same useless piece of junk a few months ago when i looked into it again.
What amazes me are the (sometimes biased) reviews on www.mmorpg.com - maybe worth checking out to see what's coming out soon and how people are rating games.

Not so hard after all...

Not so hard after all...

All the trouble I was having was solved by restarting my computer.
I would have tried it sooner, but had a lot of open apps and files.

What is PvP?

They (SL / Linden Labs) lose ~85-90% of their newbies, and still manage to make almost a $1,000,000 a day!

I still don't understand what draws so many people there. :?

Fun, fantasy role-playing, yes, that makes sense for some types of fun.
I'm thinking one of the biggest attractions is virtual sex, and not too interested in that 'industry'.

I literally tried it years ago. I didnt know a thing of what i was doing in the game. I learned to fly and then i flew around for a while and then logged out. Pretty much the end of that lol. I thought it was pretty lame. Also, i guess the way people actually make money from it is from designing stuff like cars and such and selling them to people for like $10 or whatever they want to. The funny thing is that i use the same email i did back then and they send me emails because of an item i created back then lol. Apparently its still there.

E-mails from the company, or other members?
Maybe, you had something which would make money??

i used to play SL ...

i started out as a deejay in a club there, I was respected for the good music and the fun.... back then being an SL deejay ment something...
nowadays everybody is a DJ in SL ,lol
everybody has a business in SL ..... everyone sells and leases land.....
my opinion.... SL is dying....
a few days ago i read on the news that the SEO of SL is stepping down...
i log in occasionally and the LAG is awfull... some regions are hardly even playable....

to make a long story shot, i gave up on SL

just my 2 cents :)

There are stories of people that generate upwards of $4x.xxx/year by distributing virtual items inside SL. One of the national news channels had a story about it not too long ago...can't remember which station, though.

However,... to make you really bang your head against the wall, read this:
In 2005 a player paid 100k for a piece of virtual real estate:
http://www.news.com/Man-pays-100,000-for-virtual-resort/2100-1043_3-5945248.html
and in 2007, 3 players spent a combined total of 179k on 3 shopping malls:
http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-6147376-7.html

100k and 179k for a piece of virtual real estate?! Someone is either a LOT smarter than i will ever be or a dumber than a dead fish. All reasons of economics aside...this is either genius or completely ridiculous.

You decide...

I have a high-speed connection, and their sims do seem pretty slow. When trying to read the text on a 'large sign' all the words are blurry at first, and it takes too long to load.
````
I was looking into SL for either fun or money, and haven't seen much to excite me, yet.
:)
Genius = Linden Labs for making almost $1,000,000.00 a day.
Completely ridiculous = The poor suckers who paid way too much when "real estate" values (eventually) start to fall.
They need new members to help keep the virtual economy strong, so in some ways it is a brilliant Ponzi scheme.
`````````````

Edit:

Dell and Nike both have big corporate sites in SL, so the 'game' isn't really "dead."
