I installed Skype the other day, then went out and bought this phone to use for the service.

I plan to get SkypeIn and eliminate my home phone and save the $20 a month..

Anyone else use Skype? How do you like it? Any real complaints, etc?

Hey, free to call US or Canadian phones for the rest of the year.. I called a friend in New Brunswick last night and talked a few minutes. I love her accent so it's a treat! ;)

So far I've had no problems.. clear and seems to work great.

You can purchase a local phone number for 10 euros for 3 months or 30 euros for a year.. beats paying a $20 or more monthly charge. I'm curious to know about whether anyone else uses SkypeIn and experiences missed or dropped calls, however.

Do you know if that phone works with a mac?

I don't think so.. system requirements specify Windows XP..

You can use Skype with a mic and speakers or headset tho.

Skype and SkypeIn works on a Mac (OS-X), I tried it :p It even runs on Linux or Pocket PCs.

Check if you meet the minimum requirements on www.skype.com (CPU, memory, ...)

I also use SkypeIn but don't think it's worth it (in my case)- all the calls I received were wrong numbers :D People prefer to call my cellphone - lower quality and more expensive - than SkypeIn number. On the other hand, I did not advertise this number so much... ;)

Through another program called Pamela

I use it frequently with my station, for interviews, on-air call-ins etc... haven't considered going all the way and getting an actual Skype-phone, although with the prices they charge for calls it'd probably be worth it.

I haven't heard of 'Pamela' for recording calls, I use Hotrecorder, which is a good program except you have to pay for it if you want to convert the calls to wav format

Seems to work well too.. I just purchased my SkypeIn "local" phone number and that seems to work as well.. unfortunately tho the area code is the same, it's not truly a local exchange so locals who call me may have to add a 1 or the area code. Thankfully, the only locals who call me are from "work" (so they don't matter  )

New Joisy, eh?

Nah.. hey, this girl in NB has a great French-Canadian accent.. I never get tired of listening to her. We met online maybe 4-5 years ago and she called me long distance (NB, Canada to VA Beach, Virginia) and we talked for 8 hours on the phone, two nights in a row! :lala:

Whats great about Skype and VOIP phones is the fact that your number can be anything, and any area code. For example in India my grandparents have a local Canada number, making calling cheaper and more efficient

Keep is mind skype has no emergency phone service (at least that is the case here).

I personally do not like the quality. Sometimes it's good, and sometimes bad.

If you are serious about using VOIP like your homephone, with no changes (e.g. you can still answer the phone without your computer actually being switched on), check out http://www.sipgate.co.uk/user/index.php in conjunction with a Fritzbox (http://www.sipgate.co.uk/voipshop/avm/avm_fritzbox_fon_for_dsl)
The FRITZ!Box Fon from AVM is an elegant and complete solution for your Internet connection and telephone needs: it includes an integrated ADSL modem, a full-featured router, 2 phone ports for VoIP and a pstn failover line.

The Fritz!box can be connected directly with your DSL connection and provides a robust firewall while still allowing your VoIP calls to pass through unhindered. Computers are not needed after the initial set-up and you can make and receive VoIP calls without having to turn on your computer!

Your existing analogue phone or DECT phone can simply be connected to the box and used. The use of fax equipment (over the ISDN telephone connection) is also possible. The Fritzbox Fon also has "Traffic Shaping" technology, that allows call prioritisation so your calls are clear even when you are surfing or downloading.
