Hi Npers!

I was wondering if anyone here knows what a "sphere name" is? I read an article recently and there were lots of mention of the term but I cannot find that article. I believe it has something to do with trademarks or domain names.

My search for the term in Google has not really given me answers but it seems like it is another term for "domain names"?

Any idea anyone? Thanks!

Al.

Sphere is a generic term and it has nothing to do with domain alone.

Round ball or globe are spheres.

A sphere is the set of all points in three dimensional space that are at distance r (radius) from a fixed point of that space.

One of the best example is earth atmosphere. There are six layers of earth's atmosphere:

Troposphere
Stratosphere
Mesosphere
Thermosphere
Ionosphere
Exosphere

Troposphere is lowest layer of atmosphere and Exosphere is the highest.

For instance, if you're traveling in space the first layer you will reach is the Troposphere and the last layer would be Exosphere. Beyond Exosphere is space.

I hope that helps. I don't have any other way of explaining it.

Looks to me that someone has recently invented that phrase as a synonym for domain names - the phrase is being spread far and wide via websites, blogs, etc in the past month or so.

I took physics in college even though I was a business major and that the only way I could explain in plain English unless of course you want me to explain it scientific way. :)

"A sphere is a symmetrical geometrical object. In non-mathematical usage, the term is used to refer either to a round ball or to its two-dimensional surface." ~Wikipedia

Sphere becomes popularized in the internet usage because it is such a good name especially when you add a keyword at the beginning i.e., blogosphere, forumshphere, gamesphere, etc

I think when he wrote:

"a sphere name essentially is an computer address that states a user of the Internet how to happen a peculiar website."

he meant what I mentioned above but not the word Sphere itself

Sphere existed before the internet even existed. It is widely use in Mathematics.

mmm...makes sense but still a little confused. I have just posted a question to him in his blog, lets wait for his answer. :)

Cheers!, Al.

I'd say it was a marketing type "name". To give out the message "all encompassing". In the same vein as the 360 or 247 type domains for example.

Looks to me like original article was written in a language other than english. I'd give the translation software credit for the term "sphere name".
