Dear god, lol, $2.65, I can't believe it!
Its true you defaintely must start somewhere, but not only does cost of living go up, minimum wages have not changed since 1997 in USA afaik. And many people are still working for minimum wages at the age of 21! The minimum legal wage in Australia is $10USD at that age. (Not saying that Aust is better, just comparing america it to another country thats all)
That $2.65 here in my state is NOT the minimum wage for all employees, it is the minimum wage for TIPPED employees such as wait staff and bartenders and many states have similar numbers for those categories.
However having been in the hospitality and Food & Beverage business for many years and having a wife who is a restaurant manager I can tell you that many people who wait tables for a living easily make closer to $15 an hour and upwards of $22-25 if they are in a better restaurant.
You should also remember that many states that have higher then federal standards for minimum wage still do not meet the basic requirements for exceeding the poverty line. While California may have a minimum wage of $6.75 that is squat when you consider the cost of living throughout most of the state. A single parent working for minimum wage would be several thousand dollars below the poverty line in CA making only minimum wage but working a full 40 hours per week. That is pathetic!
As for the statistics on the site, some of them are indeed skewed. Like the oil consupmtion of China which has less cars and paved roads then the US. In fact more cars were sold in the US last year alone then are owned in all of China.
The stats for South Africa vs the US for rape (which is a deplorable crime worthy of the death penalty IMHO) fails to account for the population differences between the 2 countries. When you account for population it ends up with 1 rape for every 837 people in SA while in the US it is closer to 1 for every 3323. Big difference.
As for the US not being the richest per capita, that may be so but as with the minimu wage you need to look into cost of living. That $66K in Luxembourg may not be the same as $66K else where. All those factors need to be accounted for when crunching numbers like this.
The crime numbers also have to be dug into because criminal statutes are not the same in Germany as they are in the US. What might be a crime in one place may not be in the other. They would need to break the crimes down by types and so forth so that we could better understand what it being reported.
The fun thing about statistics is that you can get them to sat what ever you want. The same thing with polls, ask the questions the right way or exclude certain answers and you get the results you need.
