I think that ALF is a trade mark.

Well, ALF was popular TV show.

I have one domain, one word .TV, 100% generic, like Ball dot TV. It turned out that there is a TV show with that name somewhere in the world, and I had some problems with them - even SEDO removed that name from my account when show owners contacted them. Beware :)

Yikes, Theo, :red:I had no idea that Alf was a trademark, and have just checked now and you are right.

What did surprise me was the fact that 85% of the domain names on this page are also trademarked, i.e.

ALF, 007, BLACK, NATURE, MINSK, PENCIL, MOE, SEASALT, TRADER, PILLS, PLR, BED, TRACK,, GADGETS,, SUGARLAND,, IGUIDE, FLO.

Thanks for pointing that out to me and I will check more often in the future. Luckily I did not register this domain name in bad faith, so hopefully that will help with the future project.

Thank you also Matthep for letting me know about the problem you had with your domain. Tricky business, this domain business.

Take care all, BJ :loveyou:

I think you can use the domain but content should be different then TV, Show, Toys ... and other restrictions. And for that reason i think those restrictions ruined your domain. :(

Hello blackjack21:

From what I am seeing for the 2 on your list that deal with me:

1) Pills closest trademark is PILLS & JACKETS or PILLS ANONYMOUS

2) Seasalt .... Seasalt dealing with clothing or footwear.

I use Trademarkia as a beginning reference.

If you are still seeing something else, let me know if you could please.

Thanks!!

Wow, RL, I did not realise there were so many acronyms for ALF, and I have found your link very helpful indeed.

Thanks for that.

I had however, seen that Google brought up the animal liberation front, and was a bit nervous about registering this name. (I do not want to be constantly looking under my car, :hehe:), although come to think about it, I do that now.

Who was it who said, โ€œjust because know one is out to get you, doesnโ€™t mean you shouldnโ€™t be paranoidโ€

Only kidding, (Iโ€™ve got a loose exhaust), anyway, thanks for the input.

Thanks BD and Johnname, I never saw the TV series, but the pictures of Alf, look kind of cute, and very funny, (almost looks like one of my x girlfriends).

Thanks Ixex, for your input, and donโ€™t worry, I was not having a go at anyone else on here, Re: Trademarks.

I was just trying to show, how difficult it is today, to register a domain name, without it being a trademark. So do not worry about your names.

As long as you do not use them in bad faith, and do not receive any commercial gain off them, linked to the trademark holder, you should be ok.

I say this with trepidation, because you will always get cases, backfiring on you, but most Judges, will see the case for what it is.

For example, if your son is called ALF and you put up a web site with pictures of him on it, then it will take a strange judge to side with the trademark holder.

Judges, get very annoyed, when they think their time is being wasted.

A recent reversal of a stupid case, happened recently with a car manufacturer, who had called itโ€™s car, (I think) Zoรซ, and some (mad) father, took them to court, saying it would mess up the life of his daughter, also called Zoรซ, (I think she might have been called, Zoรซ Citroen) anyway, the judge threw it out, (I think the father might have had to pay costs),

I believe it says, in the Bible, to always settle out of court first. (Very shrewd, that Bible). :ghost:

Any way, do not worry. :)

I use the UK office for trademarks, http://www.ipo.gov.uk/tm.htm

PILLS http://www.ipo.gov.uk/tm/t-find/t-find-text/tmtsearch-default.aspx

Seasalt http://www.ipo.gov.uk/tm/t-find/t-find-text/tmtsearch-default.aspx

(You need to put in the search term and change the drop down menu, to exact phrase)

And I also like to use the USA Patent office, http://www.uspto.gov/

Good luck with your name everyone, and keep up the good work,

Kim

Alf -awsome show! Bad domain!

Arguing the legality of such a domain is silly. Yes alot of names are TM related, in association with an acutal product that someone is deeply invested in. Does that mean every tm related name will be defended, no. This domain seems to be regged and posted to invoke responses from other NP members.

Value = $0. Best bet when registering - keep it generic as possible.

All the best.

Hi domainacrobat,

Thanks for your feedback. I quite agree with you it is best to keep your domaining as generic as possible.

The reason I have purchased this one was because I thought 3 letter dot TVโ€™s might become quite valuable in a few years time.

I would love to pick up a 3 letter generic, but they are so rare, so therefore I decided to stick to 3 letter Christian names.

I thought Alf was quite a catchy name, especially as we used to have a soap opera star called Alf, from the โ€œCoronation Street seriesโ€, so I thought that it would be memorable in the United Kingdom.

I never buy a domain name to try and get namepros members to post. I just try and buy โ€œcatchyโ€ names.

I certainly hope it is worth more than $0, as I paid a small premium for this domain name.

I am knew to this business, as I think a lot of us are, and therefore I am still learning.

I did get someone contacting me over one of my other 3 letter Christian names, so therefore, I thought this was a good omen.

I also put the domain into estibot, (which I know means little) and it came out quite positive.

I promise you, I was not having a go at other namepros members, regarding the trademark issues, I was just trying to show, how difficult it is today to get a domain name, that is not actually someone elseโ€™s trademark.

I will say one thing though, which might work in my favour, and that is this.

If the domain was dropping tomorrow, I suspect there would be a queue for it.

Keep up the good work domainacrobat.

alf can be short for alfonso :bah:

Probably the only legitimate usage of this name! Good suggestion!

Thanks BD,

I certainly like alfonso.

Perhaps there is a future for this domain. :!:

Take care

Don't see any real value in it, plus is has fairly clear trademark issues as mentioned. The main issue in my view is that the name is obviously related to the class of the trademark, ie TV, unlike say alf.com/.net/.org which would be be a lot more defendable depending on use in my view. Would be getting a credit back if it isn't too late.
