Alexa Rankings?

HELP!!!

Can someone please explain Alexa Rankings?

I am currently a traffic rank of 168,825. Last week I was in the 190s and the week before 220s. So it's dropping which is good I'm assuming.

All I know, the lower the number the better. Can someone tell me how they get this number, how to get it lower and why is it important if at all?

it's a general measure of traffic levels for websites out there. it's not very accurate unless you're in the very very low range, but it's still one of the only hands-off measures of traffic out there. you should look at actual visitor statistics if it's for your own website (i'd suggest statcounter and/or google analytics).

it's in the reverse the lesser digit your site have the higher the alexa rank.

it's based on algorithm of alexa.com no one can explain completely how do they get it or what influences them but some factor has to do with browsers who visit your site with alexa toolbar and the alexa rate they give to your site.

there are people that buy domains based on alexa ranking that I came across with and some are willing to advertise on sites that have 100K alexa ranking and less.

Alexa is just one way of determining traffic stats of a website. I would personally would check out a site's alexa rank before advertising on it. It is not accurate but could give you a good idea of the site's traffic and reach.

It usually collects data from users with toolbars.
It is mainly based on number of unique views. The site which gets the most visits in 3 month of time is ranked higher.

unfortunately some anti virus and anti spyware programs treat alexa toolbar as spyware like spybot search and destroy.

haha, alexa rankings can't break any business. it is a widely inaccurate effect at best, not a cause.

Alexa is not of huge value, just install the tool bar on your computer and all your friends and get them to visit your page alot and your number will come down and improve. I do find it good though for a quick idea on traffic of sites, especially from around 50,000 and below.

i find it funny if i sell google pr domains to people only wanting alexa rankings, usually it's in the opposite, only favors those with alexa toolbar viewing the domain. the more people with alexa toolbar viewing your domain that is.
