Unfortunely they are down right now but basically I am pretty sure they measure the amount of traffic that you get on your site once they find your website in google and other search engines. Your best bet is to submit to use the search engine submitter inside of cpanel if you have it but good luck! When they are back up I might be able to show you more.

They usually go by traffic, so it's really not something you can do except to figure out how to push a lot of traffic to your site by way of other search engines. Actually rather than use the automatic cPanel submit which doesn't work except for Google. It's a better idea to submit the large ones by hand, IMO. My site has a ranking of 670,000 which isn't too bad. Good luck.

Yeah I dont remember the exact number but I think it was ~631,000 but you do have a point there about cpanel submitter.

alexa is a joke.. i downloaded the toolbar and visited my website and it dropped my rank from 1,000,000 to like 500,000

Don't bother with Alexa. Really, it's quite meaningless, and not something you should lose sleep over or waste time on. It's really, :imho:-, more of a "fun", or "interesting" tool than anything else.

alexa rating and Google pr are the most common worthless thing to worry over with webmasters.....

alexa toolbar is a data miner (aka spyware to some people) so many people don't use it nor see alexa ratings.

Ill agree alexa is worthless, but PR is the gold standard right now. Until something better comes along, it is all we have. I dont necessarily like the ranking format they use (via links means ranks are bought and sold..not earned).

google PR is defently valueable but is wourth less to worry about, worry about rankings cause that is what gets you traffic.

Yeah unfortunely PR is very unreliable and somebody with a high amount of traffic could have a PR 0 so it doesnt help at all. The best way is straight stats from your site or better yet traffic rankings like DJ-Sound said.

I saw a PR5 domain that had no backlinks at all according to their own search, so I fail to see how PR is any indication of anything really. I know of a PR5 site that gets about 12 uniques a day. We are PR2 and get 100-125. Ranking and it's importance is dependant on what kind of site it is. There are some genres that do quite well without getting a super high ranking in Google. It's a matter of making the right connections, but even more importantly, providing unique content that will get your name recognized by word of mouth which will get you traffic very quickly and without such rankings. I think if one spends their time worrying about the content and less about the rankings, that it all evens out in the end. But again, it would depend on the kind of site and the saturation of that subject. If you are in a highly competitive market share than yeah, the rankings become mucho important. It just depends.

My sites' Alexa traffic ranks jump all over the place. One of my sites, which is relatively new, has a higher Alexa traffic rank than one of my older, more popular sites, even though my stat logs show otherwise...
