ALERT! Namewinner grabs no longer at Dotster

This morning, I inquired as to why a recent Namewinner grab has not yet appeared in my Dotster account. Here's Dotster's disappointing and unexpected response:

"That domain was registered through one of our newest registrar partners. Because they are not a Dotster owned company, your domain registration will be handled through an account with them and not via your Dotster account. Previous to August, all NameWinner partners were owned by Dotster. To improve our ability to grab domains for our customers, we have added "outside" partnerships.

We have successfully billed you for that domain. As soon as we receive confirmation that the partner registrar has set up an account for that domain, we will send you a confirmation email with information on how to access your domain with them.

We apologize for the delay and thank you for your patience while we streamline this process."

Streamlining?!! Having our domains randomly scattered across a network of mom and pop registrars is NOT streamlining. It's freakin' nuts!

- More quirky, user-unfriendly domain management interfaces to master.

- More complicated pushes and ownership transfers.

- More goofy registrar policies to master.

- More usernames and passwords to record.

- More time wasted to find, access and manages domains.

- More grief and wasted time trying to get support responses from remote partner registrars.

- And, for certain, less free services than Dotster otherwise provides.

Yeah, that sure streamlines my domain management needs! As if this crazy, ever-changing business isn't already sufficiently frustrating, costly and time-consuming!

I think I'm going to further "streamline" our operations by relying less on Namewinner/Dotster.

The important thing is that you secured the domain you wanted. Simply wait 60 days and transfer the domain to your favorite registrar.

In exchange for the privilege of paying top dollar for Namewinner grabs, am I now supposed to be pleased with having to bear the onus, time, annoyance and additional expense of routinely transferring domains to another registrar? Am I missing something here?

If you want to play the domain game with the big boys you must be prepared to pay the price. What is this ‘°expensive‘± name you‘¯re referring to anyway?

Of course, I suppose you would have been pleased if Namewinner was unable to catch the name so that you could piss and moan about that as well.

So far all my NW wins have been with Dotster, I too am not looking forward to adding another Registrar to my collection but what choice do you have.

Unfortunately it may not be that simple Doc. NW got a name for me THREE WEEKS ago using rgnames.com (a Korean site with no English equivalent). Despite my repeated emails to support (which they now simply ignore) I am no closer to having LogIn information for the domain. Cannot even get the nameservers changed!

Without login info there will be no way to transfer it out in 60 days because none of my contact information is asssociated with the domain. I don't know what the hell NW was thinking when they started using these registrars with NO system in place to actually set up accounts for their customers at the places they are using! Of course they did not wait three weeks to charge my credit card - they managed to do that immediately.

One of the few times they replied to one of my support requests (in the first week before they stopped cold turkey) they told me they were having trouble setting up accounts at the Korean company. That all should have been worked out long before they started offering the service to their customers. I admit I would still rather have the name than the alternative, but I'm starting to wonder if I am ever going to see it.

Duke,

If it‘¯s any consequence I‘¯m having similar issues with POOL. Then again, I would rather deal with these issues than not have secured the domain.

Considering my past problems with Namewinner I cannot consider the domain secured until it is in my account. Yes, they have charged my card and they say a Korean company caught the domain for them - but that doesn't necessarily mean the domain has been secured yet (especially since they seem to be unable to communicate with the Korean company!)

I would be worried in your case as well! Did you try contacting them via phone??

You're kidding right? Dotster/NW doesn't answer the phone. Seriously! I've tried many times. It appears impossible to reach a human. They have gotten me some terrific names and I appreciate them for that, but they have some of the worst customer service I have ever encountered.

What's worse, Namewinner/Dotster doesn't even bother to mention in their capture acknowledgement/receipt or otherwise notify you that your domain is being hosted by another registrar. Winning bidders are left to guess the host registrar for their non-Dotster domains.

They've been around long enough to know better!

I'm disgusted.

as am I. I supposedly got a notice from them via support that they have contacted the highest levels. Whether that will do anything or not is yet to be determined.
