AI, Search Engines, and the Long-Term Impact on Traffic & Domain Values
AI is clearly changing how people consume information, and I think this will have real consequences for traffic and domain values over time.
Google and Bing are already answering many queries directly in the search results using AI. On top of that, tools like ChatGPT and similar assistants give users answers without ever sending them to the original websites.
If users don’t need to click as often, traffic becomes less important than it used to be. For many years, domain value was strongly tied to SEO traffic, informational content, and exact-match keywords. That model looks increasingly under pressure.
From an investor’s point of view, a few things stand out.
Brandable domains matter more.
Even in an AI-driven world, people still search directly for brands, companies, and trusted names. Domains that work well as brands should continue to hold value.
Pure informational domains may weaken.
Domains built mainly to capture search traffic could struggle unless they are tied to an actual business, product, or service.
I don’t see TLDs becoming equal.
If anything, trust and familiarity matter more when AI systems decide what to reference. .COM is still the most recognized and trusted extension globally, and I don’t see that changing. Other TLDs have their place, but I don’t see them replacing .COM at the top end.
Domains continue shifting from traffic to identity.
The value is less about clicks and more about owning a name that represents a real brand or business.
AI doesn’t make domains obsolete, but it does change why certain domains are valuable. Strong brands and premium names should do fine. Traffic-only domains may face more pressure going forward.
Curious how others here see it.
Are you adjusting your portfolio because of AI, or staying the course?
