.AI Domains – Still the Future or Already Overhyped in 2025?

Over the last few years, .AI domains have been on fire 🔥.
Sales like Humanix.ai ($29,888) and countless startups choosing .AI gave many domainers the feeling that this extension could rival .COM in the tech space.

But here we are in late 2025… and the question is:

👉 Is .AI still a rising star, or has the hype peaked?

Why .AI Could Keep Growing:

✅ AI isn’t a fad – it’s reshaping every industry.
✅ Startups backed by VCs often choose .AI to look modern and innovative.
✅ Strong brandability in tech niches (short, futuristic, easy to remember).

Why .AI Might Stall:
❌ Renewal fees are high – not sustainable for big portfolios.
❌ Many .AI names are parked, not developed.
❌ Startups eventually “upgrade” to .COM once they scale.

💡 My questions to the community:

  • Have you sold any .AI domains recently? At what prices?
  • Do you think .AI can hold long-term value or is it a short-term trend?
  • If you had $10K to invest today, would you put it in one solid .AI or a mid-tier .COM?

I’d love to see real-world stories and predictions – let’s get a serious debate going. 🚀

The main risk I see is that the AI term either becomes redundant (in the same way that "Online" has become a redundant term for any domain name), or that "AI terminology" evolves in such a way that AI might sound a bit dated and archaic. Many are already thinking about AGI for example.

But for now the topic is still very hot and explicitly mentioning that you are focused on AI (as a company or in a domain name) will attract likely more investors and investments.

AI isn't a fad. We will see AI become way more powerful, accurate, and useful in every day life when decentralized AI is adopted.

AI is here to stay.

But I suspect .ai domains craze will cool down after most single word premium domains are sold.

Like what happened to .io and .xyz before.

Correct, artificial intelligence is definitely here to stay. Dot AI is just another extension. No different than dot Mobi. It’s afforded no unique or emerging protocols to its propagation and relevance.

I suspect that in it being the new hot extension, that buy/sell impulse will last for about two to three years. That is a market within a market. Those that have the .AI extensions should, in my opinion, move quickly in order to get a good return on their investment..

Vincent Cate used to run the whole .AI domain extension.🇦🇮

There’s a story about a pastor who never missed a sermon. One week he had no choice but to be away, so he suggested recording his message and having it played in his absence. The congregation thought it was a fine solution. On the appointed day, they set his tape recorder to play, placed their own recorder in front of it to capture the words, and quietly filed out…

Except, that they die harder, because there are tons of money pouring in ai startups. But many already started to go with other extensions like bolt.new. They start with an exotic domain, then they buy the .com once they can afford it.

Didn't realize it until you mentioned :) then when I looked again, it makes sense

but what happens when Ai is no longer artificial? This is where my Super/Synthetic Intelligence comes in (.si) domains

Worth mentioning:

The Turing test, originally called the imitation game by Alan Turing in 1949,[2] is a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to that of a human. In the test, a human evaluator judges a text transcript of a natural-language conversation between a human and a machine. The evaluator tries to identify the machine, and the machine passes if the evaluator cannot reliably tell them apart. The results would not depend on the machine's ability to answer questions correctly, only on how closely its answers resembled those of a human.
