Hi!

I've never used Afternic before, just Sedo. Can someone please tell me what Afternic does to help you sell your domains? What kind of exposure do you get by listing there? Does Mr. Enduser go to Afternic.com in search of a domain name?

Thank-you

Good...

GoDaddy branding nice as most end users have heard of GoDaddy.
Payment plans nice as makes it easier for a buyer to say yes.
Buy it now domains get very good distribution.

Not so good...

Afternic has been a bug fest for quite a while, seems to be slowly improving
Some brokers very good and hungry for sales, others not as good.

etc...

Hi!

Can someone please tell me what Afternic does to help you sell your domains?

In my case, the Afternic system actually hampers sales, especially smaller ones in the $1K-$5K range.

On Dan, I would consistently make money at this range, while negotiating some higher-end domains and getting the odd sale there too. The key was speed - when someone is looking to buy a domain for $2500, they don't want a long, drawn-out negotiation that takes a month - they want to buy it, or not, and move on to more important business.

At Afternic, *everything* is a long, drawn out negotation where the brokers take 2-4 days for each step and I regularly have "Stalled" transactions that took a month or more. And we're talking stuff like "Buyer offers $1700 and I counter at $2850" stuff which was cake to do on Dan, but takes absolutely forever on Afternic.

The delays are bad enough, but Afternic never supplies any specific information on the negotiation or transaction and instead uses canned drop-down selections. All you can do is look at your Dashboard every few days, hoping for some type of update, with most ending with "Stalled" or "Confused" with absolutely no hard data on exactly what happened.

The least the brokers could do is to update the "Offer Price" with the buyer's counter offer, but they don't even do that. I have inquired on "Stalled" negotiations, only to find out (a week later) that a counter offer had been made but never updated on the transaction or communicated to me. So much information is hidden at Afternic and everything takes way too long to progress.

The end result is a total lack of control and the inability to quickly change gears and create a sale. On Dan, had the same buyer countered my $3.5K buy price with $2K, I might would have something to go on, and had the flexibility to meet him in the middle. At the very least I would have known about the $2K counter. Instead, it was sent to "Stalled" with a drop-down selection of "buyer indicated price was too high". Great.

To me, selling on Afternic is virtually impossible. You have zero control, you receive zero information, you have zero flexibility, and every single step in the process literally takes forever.

The only reason I'm still there is that my nameservers are set to Afternic (and I don't have the free time to reauthorize them elsewhere) and GD continues to promise a mythical "self-brokerage system".

But at some point, I'm gone.

Before you leave, consider adding a BIN of $2.5k to $3.5k to the domain names for which you'd typically accept offers in that range.

See how it goes.

No.

My prices are not static and depend on multiple factors. If I'm going to "take the brokers out of the equation" and just BIN everything, then I'll go somewhere with a lower commission rate.

That's the main problem with Afternic - they depend entirely on a broker system that only works if you set a BIN and remove the brokers from the transaction. Seems mighty flawed if you ask me.

A 2016 thread! Afternic has evolved significantly since then, but it remains the world's largest domain name marketplace.

To give you a glimpse into one of the main ways that we attract buyers - we have two distribution networks: Standard and Premium.

All domains are included in the Standard network, while Fast Transfer domain listings are part of the Premium network. Both networks partner with the world's top registrars to ensure your domain name appears whenever someone searches for it. The Premium network offers extra exposure.

The Standard network receives 30 million monthly domain search queries, while the Premium network receives 85 million (represents average searches based on GoDaddy data from January through November 2023.).

Through GoDaddy search, Afternic sellers can also use Lease to Own options to attract potential buyers, while Boost provides verified badges and inclusion in suggested search results.

Additionally, Afternic's set of landers provide optimized for sale pages for your domain names, with our Buy it Now and Custom Landers hosted through GoDaddy.

If you're interested in learning more about leveraging Afternic, @Domain Academy is conducting an Afternic masterclass towards the end of this month and again throughout the year. This is an exclusive opportunity for Domain Academy members through the Discount Domain Club.

We hope that helps!

More management speak and fantasy statements from this terrible, useless and exploitative company.
