I am currently developing sites as addon domains for my main domain. As a result they can be found at www.maindomain.com/domain2. I have noticed that this is showing up in search engines - is there any way to make it so that only www.domain2.com shows up in search engines?

Hopefully it's possible to understand what it is I am trying to do!

Thanks!

if there aren't any links to maindomain.com/domain2 then it shouldn't show up in search engines... you could get rid of these links, then remove those urls using google webmaster tools.

Search engines do tend to pick this up even if you don't deliberately link that way - they find it from the primary domain.

Use htaccess to redirect (301) anything.yourdomain.tld to either yourdomain.tld or www.yourdomain.tld.

You should be doing this anyway to keep your site from resolving both with/without the www.

addon

Since we are all using shared servers (rather than a dedicated server) all sites here are more or less subdomains of something at bluehost... Subdomains are just reference pointers to sub-folders. When it comes to search engines, everything is either indexed 2 main ways. either through the robots.txt file in the domain root directing the crawler on how to search, or through direct references, in which a subdomain referece is the same as a direct sub-folder reference. Hope that clears some things up.
