the whole registerfly thing got me thinking, what's the real difference between an icann accredited registrar and a non-accredited one? i would have thought that being a registrar and being icann accredited should go hand in hand.

A non accredited registrar is simply a reseller for someone else.

Registerfly started as a tucows reseller if I remember correctly then moved onto eNom before becoming accredited themselves.

Being accredited basically means that they deal direct with the domain names and get them straight from the registry.

The advantage of being accredited consist of:-

Cost (you cut out any middle men)
You have almost complete control over the domains instead of relying on someone else's system

Becoming accredited is not cheap however hence why reseller accounts are very popular and some large companies rely on this.
