A Very Good Question For You All.

The 'Key' to Domaining, whether you just own a few as a hobby or a huge portfolio, is to recover reg. fee each year, hopefully with a profit. :)

How many of you Name Pro Members have made a profit, offset against your registrations and renewals in the past year, either through parking, sales or a combination of both???

Look Forward To Your Replies.

If a similar thread has appeared in the past, my appologies.

Thanx.

Good Question, I do domaining only for a hobby.
it is my opinion that if you can park a domain or use some sort of ads to pay for the renewals it's great. if I have a domain that is not paying for it self I sell within first 6 months. IMO, unless I plan to develop there is no real need to keep it.
again unless it's earning some sort of cash.
I see so many people who think they need a large portfolio in order to some how compete with other domineers. more and more people buying tons of domains that are nearly useless, atleast they appear to be. and then end up losing everything...

I've made a profit through reselling, but not very much. I do it more as a hobby.

Hey Dominic,

Great question but there is already a poll for that going, it has 63 votes and counting here is the link http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/195023-vote-now-how-profitable-have-dns.html .

The more votes the more accurate the results. IMO

However I do wish we could update our votes because since then I have sold some DNs but considering all of my reg fees I still hav'nt made a dime so I guess I really wouldn't have to change my response.:)

I suppose yours is a bit diff. though 'cause it does ask by which form of selling.

With roughly 98% of the past year's domains selling for a profit I'm doing fine. Typically, when I register a name I try to make sure I can easily get 2x-3x the money back for it. That doesn't mean that there aren't duds, because their are, but I try to minimize the number and have done fairly well so far.

Just keep banlance till now. do this business as my fun and maybe some day in future one sale will bring you the huge profit. :alien:

Like I said in the other thread, the first domain I purchased for resell netted me a $500 profit. I got all excited thinking I was gonna get rich ($500 is a lot to me), but the train did not keep on a rollin'... That's not to say I haven't made more sales and profit, but generally speaking, I'm not getting rich off of it. And contrary to my wishes to reinvest the money, my better half insisted we use it to pay bills... :)

I have spent just over $1000 all together. I have made just over $500 with all combined sales, adsense, parking revenue.

These figures are for 5 months of domaining. I hope to recoup all my reg fees and make a profit by the one year mark. :)

Initially, I used to be very worried while buying domains. After I saw some positive results from parking pages, i've become more adventurous, and i buy domains with less hesitation these days.

You forgot development as an option. I do a mix of all three options depending on what type of domain it is.

D,
I have been doing domaining for a living since 97 and have had 3 big hits, and many minor xxx/xxxx sales. I buy with the thought that if i have the name for more then 10 years will i ever make back that investment, i dont want to buy one that will be with me 3 years and then drop just because i dont want it anymore. If i can buy a name on ebay or here for 1 to 10$ i will take a calculated risk that i can move it with in the year or before the reg is up. I am also getting into development with a few names and point all my names to that site. I dont park but if someone wants one of my names when they or if they look up the who is then they will see its forsale. Other then that i use them to obtain more traffic. I think if you can money wise and you like a certain type of domain, like gaming, sports, entertainment, gambling, ect. an investment of many nice names to form a portfolio is wise if its your field of expertise.
With all this said please remember;
If you follow what i say you may not become rich in fact you may go broke. D-:
;)
