Hey all.

Here's a very stupid problem to brighten your day.

I sold a domain name.

I got paid for the domain name.

The buyer won't send me his transfer information.

...

Essentially communication is nonexistant. I sent a couple letters before I got paid, but that only took a couple days. Now I've sent even more messages over a longer period of time and I'm not recieving the information needed to push the domain.

This is someone who's bought a lot of names in the past according to third party data. someone with a professional-sounding username, etc. (IE: Company name as opposed to "GrandmaBob42")

I want to just leave it be until he snaps out of it and does his part to close the deal, but I feel like some other shoe is going to drop.

Anyone have ANY idea whatsoever if this is some sort of trick?

I can't help but feel like the payment is going to be charged back or something.

You didn't mention in what manner you got paid. Paypal? Wire Transfer? Cheque???

I've had the same thing happen to me.
Even after repeated requests for the transfer information.
There was about nine months registration left on the name, and what I did was just to let it expire. That way I figured a refund couldn't be claimed because I did all I could to make the transfer, and didn't profit any further.
Maybe I should have hung on to it, or re-registered it; but I didn't think it would be right. (I'll never be a millionare)
Anyway, that's how I handled the same situation.

Regards

Ralph.

I had a name sell at Sedo, buyer paid right away but wouldn't initiate a transfer (cctld that at the time could only change ownership by changing registrar). Sedo didn't meet ownership requirements, so couldn't hold the name, but of course I had to pay a higher commission for this transaction anyways.

I waited months, I asked sedo what would happen at renewal time. They told me they would refund the buyer his money! I wasn't happy. About 8 months of the money sitting escrow, registry policies changed. Pushes were now allowed, the buyer provided his Godaddy details and the transaction was complete.

Not sure what this means for your situation, other than to let you know that it isn't necessarily a scam. Some people are just weird.

If you've done all you can to contact the buyer including a phone call if you can find his number, I'd probably let it drop come renewal time.

It could also be that the buyer has some personal problems you are not aware of.

Just sit tight, I'm sure he'll get back to you soon since he doesn't seem to be new to domaining.

This happens. I sold a name for $350 almost 3 years ago, and it has never been picked up.

Another went for about $150 went for 8 months before the person's parents contacted me and gave me the transfer info.

I've heard of this happening with 4-figure sales even.

After many more than reasonable attempts to effect a transfer, and a warning letter that his last chance is passing, the ball's in your court.

A refund is being way too accommodating for someone who has taken up valuable time and possibly precluded other sales. Depending on how much he paid, I would either drop it or keep it a couple years and see if they turn up again. I think the number of yearly renewals you'll want to pay would be based on how much money you received.

AS Irieman said, the buyer may have problems, or an illness. Or he may just be a compulsive person who drops money on stuff all the time and forgets about it.

Not sure about the law, but there is a statute of limitations for civil actions regarding the sale of goods. In Vermont, for example, it's 4 years. After a certain point, the buyer loses his rights to possession or refund.

Ohh , that's really one of the worst situation where you would have felt to catch that buyer and teach him some lessons!!
