Thanks for sharing @mems. There are only a few examples in the article. Do you know if the full list of 200 has been published anywhere? I presume they are all .com that start with (or perhaps end with) LongIsland, but is that right?

I did a little research but could not find a published list. Using domainiq, one can get a sense of the names. Some names also start with "Li".
I also found that this entrepreneur is a pretty well known domainer.
I am assuming he is planning to repeat the success he had with coupon domains.
I found this interview to be inspiring -

What a waste of money. I live on Long Island. For years I owned many of the towns names, zip codes, historical events. About 10 years ago I started unloading them. Most of those domains today are just redirects or empty sites. At this point, these names are only of value to domain speculators. I would love to see the list. Sounds like flipping is the only way he will make money and only if other speculators get suckered into buying them.

While a domain like LongIsland.com has value, domains like LongIslandWineries.com and LongIslandZipCodes.com are just list type sites. Neither has changed hands for years, so this isnt some kind of new endeavor. Seriously, who the fnck needs a website that shows you the zip codes for a location and what you can do there ? Both sites look like they were designed 10 to 15 years ago.

Good proof of this not being a hot item is that both longislandwines.com and longislandvineyards.com are dead sites. If LI sites were hot, you would not see this as they are as good or better than his domain.

I wish I still had my old domains to unload on this guy.

Seven years old. Don't count on lightning striking twice on this mess.

Since he has money, he will talk this up and get people to buy them, but only because of the buzz he creates. This kind of story does not just appear in the news here organically, he had to contact people to setup the story and get Newsday to publish it.

    Shenanigans !

If the guy can build up some websites, do some simple SEO he could lease them out but I'm not thinking home run levels of cash just some additional income. LongIslandbakery longislanddentist etc type of names.

I have sold quit a few niche domains since 2002 and at the beginning people called me crazy. It only took one big sale to pay off all the registrations for years to come and I'm always pleasantly surprised when I get unsolicited offers.

The only problem I see with his plan is that he purchased a lot of the domains/sites for a fair bit of money. When I started I did mostly hand registrations so my costs were minimal.

As with all people in the domaining industry, I wish him prosperity and hope his investments come to fruition. (y)

You don't know Long Island. It's one of the most densely populated areas in the USA. It's 120 miles long and is home to some of the most wealthy, educated and web savvy people in the country. Domains like the ones you posted would be worth $10. Nobody on the Island would refer to a bakery or dentist as "Long Island", it would be town based at most.

I am sure this guy is just sitting on junk, but if I can see his list I could know for sure.

Once he owns LongIsland.com all others become useless to him because he can just do this...

    Wineries.LongIsland.com

    or

    LongIsland.com/Wineries

That's the beauty of owning your master domain and why maple.com would be my cats meow.

Seems to be a never ending PR campaign, we don’t even have a price on it. Domains sells everyday who cares, the seller stated he was going thruba divorce, makes sense, so what now?

There's a fair chance that he was banking on Amazon setting-up their HQ in the Long Island area and this might explain his domain purchases. An Amazon HQ would have brought an immense influx of extra money, people, investments, and interest in the Long Island area. Well, with today's news, we know where that scenario has gone.
