Hi, everyone.

Does 60 day anti-transfer rule still exists? I have recently purchased a few domains with CheapNames (Wild West Domains) simply because their registration was cheap. After that I contacted CheapNames regarding the transfer of my domains and I've got the following:

"Thank you for contacting Online Support. There is a 60 day waiting period after registering a domain name or making a change to the registrant information. You will be able to transfer the domain name without an issue after the 60 day period."

I was not aware of this rule when I was purchasing the domains. 60 days is way too long. Does ICANN has anything to do with that or is it the registrars which make their own rules?

Thank you,

That rule is standard among most (if not all) registrars, and I believe ICANN controls this. You can still "push" domains to another account within the same registrar though, so you can sell it immediately. The 60-day rule does not apply if it stays within the same registrar.

Thank you for clearing this up for me, Gene. I appreciate that.

:hi:

The 60 day transfer rule for new registrations is an ICAAN rule that all Registrars and Resellers have to follow.

But the 60 day transfer rule after changing your Who Is info is a GoDaddy rule which should be disallowed by ICAAN. GoDaddy resellers would also have this rule since they use GoDaddy's control panel.

And ICAAN may soon disallow this unsavory practice.

Thanks to Andrew of DomainNameWire.com, see here:
http://domainnamewire.com/page/13/

Excerpts:
"GoDaddy May Have to Stop ‘60 Day’ Transfer Policy"

"Many people who have tried to transfer a domain name from GoDaddy to another registrar have faced a hurdle. If they’ve changed their whois information within the past 60 days, GoDaddy will deny the transfer for “security reasons”."

"But the practice may come to an end thanks to an ICANN advisory."

"The new ICANN advisory, ...states:
2.A registrant change to Whois information is not a valid basis for denying a transfer request."

Keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks for that information Patrick, that's great news. Let's hope this comes to pass.
