60 days GoDaddy rule. How does it work?

Hello,

I would have a question for those who use Godaddy mainly. there is that 60 day rule of transferring domains from Godaddy. Is this active only for transferring out domains or to pushes too?

I do not like that much GoDaddy, and I just created 2 weeks ago an account there because I bought some domains registered at Godaddy. Today I got an offer for one of them, and would like to know if I can transfer it to another GD account.

AFAIK, you can push to another GD account at any time.

I think the 60 day rule is an ICANN rule, not GoDaddys rule.

You may push between GoDaddy accounts as much as you want, just not transfer to a new registrar

Well, this isnt entirely uncommon.

BTW - there is an addition to the 60 day rules. If any of the registrant information is changed, the domain is locked for 60 days. So, be advised, do no alter the registrant information or renew/transfer/register the domain within 60 days of transfer.

You can push to the same reseller in a different account or godaddy, but no transfers...

This rule is totally ridiculous in my opinion and i think we as a domain community should let godaddy know of our disapproval. Whats the point of this rule but to arbitrarily control your domain.

Part of this rule exists to protect registrars from Chargebacks. For example, I would register a domain name at GoDaddy for 8 Years, then transfer over to another registrar for 1 year.

I would do a chargeback on my first charge at GoDaddy once the transfer is complete, and then GoDaddy is out the money for 8 years renewal. It makes sense, but most registrars are abusing this rule, in an effort to try and keep customers as long as possible.

Yes, you can do this. 60 days is just to push it to another registrar.

To be honest, I do not know why the 60 day rule exists. It is rather stupid, if you ask me.

60 Days is the typical time frame to initiate a chargeback on a credit card. Many credit card companies used to limit their customers to this timeframe. It gave them enough time to see the charge on their bill and try to get a refund.

However, many credit card companies now will extend that period to 6 months. So, its almost irrelevent at this point anyway. There are additional ways to resolve this issue as well, In my opinion it could just as easily be done through an agreement of the registrars and ICANN to return a domain name in the event that a chargeback occurs.

Thanks for the info. I agree; a terms of service clause relating to charge-backs would be better than a rule that locks up your name for 60 days if you make any minor adjustments to your whois or account.

Godaddy resellers are at wildwest domains which is technically a different registrar. Godaddy's bulk/discount site is bluerazor. You can't push between any of the three of them without doing a transfer.

At wildwest, you can't even push between resellers, so be sure of renewal prices and expire dates before buying any domains there. If you buy a name within 60 days of renewal, you'll have no choice but to renew there since transfer will be locked upon the registrant name change.

true. you can not push names between Godaddy resellers. Some registerar like dotster, you can push names from one reseller to another.

if you want to take the domain name to any register you will need to wait the 60 days if you can sell it right away then you can sell it to somebody else on GoDaddy before the 60 days or get the person to join GoDaddy then sell it to them before the 60 day.you can't transfer it to a different register until the 60 days are up.
