Today , on the 23/03/06 , the number of active .com domain names surpassed the 50,000,000 mark :tu:

internet statistics (source whois.sc)

I include a graph which shows the number of hostnames over the years (source netcraft.com)
Here is a comprehensive definition of hostname

On that graph you can basically "see" the results of the dotcom bubble and of the dotcom boom .
In the attachment I added the black line , the black arrow and the black text for easier comprehension of the concept

81,665 transfers in the last 24 hours for .com :imho:

My interpretation of this graph is that the growth of people registering domain names is much faster than the growth of genuine, developed internet sites. Is this correct? Is this really good news for 'domainers'?
Very interesting post though.

What worries me is that in the foreseable future laws might be implemented or changes brought about somehow to prevent hoarding of domain names without them being developed properly. This of course is a problem that business owners are faced with, not being able able to register the name they want and instead being forced almost to pay some excorbitant price for it from a domain speculator. If those changes or laws are brought about then it will be bad news for us domain speculators.

Personally , I think the large number of domains is great news for domainers . Since most good domains are already registered , companies and corporations looking for a good domain to establish an internet presense will have to turn to domainers for a purchase (or the the secondary domain market) . That would basically (and progressively) push the domain prices upwards (especially of .coms) and therefore many domainers could benefit greatly .

As I can see from the graph , roughly half the domains registered are being developed and has been happening for many years now . That is rather logical to me since many people register domains to develop in the future , to "secure" a site/brand they have from close variations or to sell them in the future for a bigger profit .

I don't think such laws would be implemented as long as trademarked domains are respected . Even if they did implement such laws , it would be difficult to discriminate because people would just build minisites with regularly updated content (for example from feeds or websites providing content) , so it would be difficult to accuse them for not developing a domain .

Ja you are right-makes sense. Also I was thinking in the real world if you have a business and you need a place or property to establish your base of operations from you are going to have to pay good money as well for that property and if you want high profile property you will have to fork out even more. Same story in the virtual property market.

I see that HEARD ISLAND AND MCDONALD ISLANDS only have 38 IPs allocated while USA has 1,331,974,873.

They're still in the middle ages ... lol

Malaysia - Even if someone has only 0.00000002% of those .coms but the domain has the letters "s" , "e" and "x" in it (and only those) ... it is still a looooot of money  . In domains , quality is what counts and not quantity . On the other hand , if someone has both quality and quantity ... then ... I guess he/she is f*cking rich

webworld - the funniest thing is that those islands are uninhabited lol (sourse infoplease.com)

If there is anyone that doesn't know infoplease , go and check it out at that link . They have dictionary , encyclopedia , thesaurus , biographies , almanacs , atlases all in one place . They also have a great feature where ... if you double-click on ANY word , a new window pops up with a search on that word ... very cool :tu:

sonyking - I don't know what kind of vitamins you are on , but .com domains are approximately 50 million (not 500) . Therefore , 1 Billion domains D-: looks rather far away .

Unless , you are planning to invest approximately $9,500,000,000 in domains in this month and you haven't told us yet :)

But I DO share your enthusiasm ... :)
