5 letter domain that was worthless now might be worth something

A couple years ago I was trying out the whole make money domain business and failed. I registered a bunch of domain, tried to sell ones i thought were good and Sedo wouldn't give me the time of day. So I gave up.

Recently I check back into my old account to register a name for a blog and I went through my old names. One name i registered, basically from keyboard mashing, seems to be some sort of pharmaceutical drug now. I googled and there are different products using this name and one big pharmaceutical company in particular has a product attached to this name. I did a exact word match search and there are a few searches per month so people are looking for it.

its a CVVCV.com name and i think it would be very valuable to this company but I don't know if i should go through a broker and wait forever or contact the company myself or put it up for auction. I'm weary of auctions because I don't know if companies are contacted about auctions and of course i want top dollar for it.

The name is brandable judging from some of the searches and forums where people use it as a slang phrase and I bet pharmaceutical companies would fight over it if they had the foresight to see it's potential. I checked the trademark look up just to make sure it wasn't trademarked and it isn't.

My question is, how can i get the most out of this name? I don't think I'll ever have this type of luck again and i want to make the most of it. And what should be my first step in selling this name?

If businesses are using your name as a product you could lose it, even if you registered the domain prior. Spend 30 mins making a one-sentence website for it, and just make something up.

BOOVA - robot vacuum cleaner that scares kids. Product in initial stages of development.

That way nobody can claim that you registered it in bad faith, or that you have no rights to it.

One of my examples is blackberry.info. Proving that I bought the domain to write about the actual berries.

It's good that you checked into if the name was trademarked. But as was suggested you should be careful about having the domain offered to the company with the product. Having page content will help protect you from appearing to get the domain in "bad faith" as they say. So what can you do with a domain like that, especially if the company should get it trademarked, or they already do, but in another country?

It's hard to tell if you have anything valuable or not. If you get the domain then you could start asking people what they think. I couldn't tell if it is the same as a product name or just related to a product. Either one is pretty risky I think. The product because of legal issues (you can use the domain for other things, but not for the product) or because the company can find other domains that may work as well as your related name.

This style of domaining is a lot like playing the lottery. Others may disagree, but if you put your $10 and get 10 lottery tickets you may have much better chances of winning that buying only one domain name. :)

It's always a potential value booster when a large company starts using a name you have under .com. However, you might be sitting on a great name, but nobody have yet contacted you about this name so the chances that companies actually will "fight" each other over this one are probably slim. If this company has no interest in the domain your chances of finding other end users can be low.

Good luck with the sale.
