Thieves have stolen nearly $300 million (148 million pounds) from a bank in Baghdad, police and a bank official said on Thursday, in what is probably one of the biggest thefts in Iraq since the 2003 war to topple Saddam Hussein.

Police said the thieves were three guards who worked at the private Dar Es Salaam bank in Baghdad's Karrada district.

They said that when bank employees arrived for work on Wednesday they found the front door open and the money gone. The guards, who normally slept at the bank, had also disappeared, they said.

An official at the bank said about $300 million in U.S. dollars had been stolen, as well as 220 million Iraqi dinars (87,000 pounds). He declined to give further details.

They could have at least closed the door when they left! ;)

When I saw the headliner of this post. It reminded me of the movie I saw with George Clooney in it called. "Three Kings". Interesting story line though. In the movie it was 4 US soldiers that stole from Saddams stash of cash. I know in the OP it was 3 Iragi Guards. Like I said the first thing that came to mind was the movie I saw.

My thoughts as well... someone will be living large after this one.. I'll bet most will think the money will be going to insurgents, I think it's simply thieves at work.

What makes no sense to me is why didn't the guards take it, stash it and return to work. That way it wouldn't seem like it's them that stole it, they could just say that the guard that was guarding at the time was in the washroom and the other two were asleep. Then they could of all gotten away with it scott free! But now everyone will know who to look out for. They didn't think it through very much, now did they;)

Pretty sure if they stuck around after stealing the money they would have gotten investigated anyways... at least now they have a chance at not getting caught

OR maybe the guards are dead somewhere and someone else stole the money and killed the guards to make it look like it was them?

Hmm, that's a very good theory there Dave. This could have easily happened, and is actually a fairly smart thing to do, as now everyone's going to think it was the guards. Who knows though, only time can tell.

I think that with $100 MILLION you just don`t even think about working another minute. :imho:

Also, if they were doing like you say, I wonder how long they would have lived......how long do you think it would have taken before someone would have shooted them , maybe just 2 of them to force the third to say where the money is?

And also.....I can`t picture anyone in the world which is not already that rich , that would not run away with $100 Million.

The real stupid mistake was to leave only 3 persons around that amount of money.

Could be they wanted them to take it... be funny if every bill were marked in some way and it was bait to bust up financing for insurgents? Just a thought... but I'm still more inclined to think it had more to do with greed than politics or terrorism. Ever see Kelly's Heroes?
