$30,000 to spend...what to do?

Someone offered to give me $30k to invest domains (because of my decent track record at a much smaller scale). He asked what my "strategy" would be, what my "business plan" was and I said that I didn't really have one... Everything was transaction-dependent, meaning that I looked for good domains that were either undervalued or unregistered, and picked them up and tried to turn them back over.

If you had $30k, do you think you could spend it effectively in domains? If so, what would a tangible strategy be? Would you hope to profit on parking? Would you buy mid-priced domains for hold value? Would you buy names to develop?

So far I've only been involved with about $2k of my own money and done very well, but how to articulate a real strategy for 30k....?

Any ideas?

Thanks!
P

Just be careful if you dont know that investor very well. Many of "investors" want just to take your idea and business plan without investing with you.

In other way, there are so many opportunities in domaining, just need to have cash ready. I would say if your investor is serious, you have a great opportunity :)

if you change your "strategy" because you got more money to spend you might get different results. Stick with what works and just scale up a bit. Good Luck

Very well said! :bingo:

Good point, if it ain't broke don't fix it :snaphappy:

I would'nt "gamble" with other peoples money but if I did I think the best place to spend it would be in the drops, watch ALOT, spend when there's little competition and know when to push your bid that little bit higher...and don't try and take on the big boys ;)

Good luck

I would go on flippa.com and buy a few of the many website businesses that are already making $xxx - $x,xxx a month. They often sell for quite cheap on there. For 30k you could buy one that is already making $3,000-5,000 a month and has a track record of making that much for a year or more. Why waste your time buying and trying to sell domain names when there's already profitable businesses you can buy for that amount?

Put a name for sale at sedo, BUY your own domain for 3k, this will get attention, then put up an auction again ;)

NO! NEVER do this. You'll likely lose a lot of money.

You'll get exposure, yes, but you'll also get ppl wondering why it was back on the market. ppl will likely believe it to be in some way flawed.

Don't be absent-minded with $30,000. Invest in development or go to Flippa. Of course though, if you are doing well already, don't change your strategy just because you have a higher budget :)

I've learned not to help others in domains.

My last 5k is now 30k.
Now I will take 30k and try to make 100k

Back out and back out quick. It's no fun investing someone's money. You can't reap 100% of the benefits once you've made them.

many consider .us under valued ......now could be the time

Invest ONLY in .com

Buy one good domain which you KNOW you can sell for a 3x or more markup.

Rinse and repeat.

I second this thought, just make sure that you are able to fulfill the eligibility requirements.

Domain pricing is highly subjective. Before you can invest $30K you need to truly understand domain value - both reseller and end user.

Once you have a good idea of value, I would say just go where the value is. It might be a $10K .COM generic term, or $2K .NET or .ORG, $350 .US, etc.

Can you show me any .US sales in the 100k range?

Such advice is extremely self serving, sorry to say.

What the OP would be left with is $30k worth of domains that no one will purchase, at least imho, flame away. :p

Who said he wanted to buy 1 domain for $30K?

If you can buy a domain for $300 and sell it for $1,200 you are doing pretty well.

Ok, can you show me any .US recently purchased for $300 and flipped for $1200?

Plus, how many flips will it take for him to turnover the entire $30k? - 100

That means one sale every 3 days, assuming he needs to flip 30k in a year, can you show me 100 sales by ANYONE in the last year in .US at those profit margins?

I can give you a laundry list of .US I have bought in the $XX range and sold in the low $X,XXX range.

But, I am not saying buy .US, I am saying go wherever the value is.

You do not have to invest all $30K at one time. You need to keep cash on hand in case deals come up.

.COM is the king if you know what you are doing. Otherwise it is irrelevant.

In my opinion it pays to have a well diversified portfolio.

I wouldn't recommend anyone investing $30,000 on .us domains although I would recommend a small portion (5%) of those dollars go to quality .us domains.

Everything was transaction-dependent, meaning that I looked for good domains that were either undervalued or unregistered, and picked them up and tried to turn them back over.

Stay with what works for you and don't try to reinvent the wheel.

I can make $10,000 a month if I get a good domain, but that costs $100,000 today.
But the return on that money is great if you have long term ability.

The Internet is the best business ever. You need programming skills, the imagination and creativity, common sense, seo knowledge, and patience.
Most don't have the programming skills so they don't get past step 1.
