I tried to register a domainname with 2 hypens (--) behind eachother, but it seemed I couldn't. Any know if this is a problem in the registrars software or is this forbidden?

'--' is allowed in .com/.net domains.

I'm not sure where you tried looking them up at but I just checked at GoDaddy and eNom and both allow the "--" in the lookups. Best of luck and Welcome to NamePros! :tu: B-)

I believe there may be a restriction only against them being in the third and fourth postion consecutively in the name, since a new standard will try to convert them to internationalized (non-english character) domain names.

Also, they cannot be in the first or last position which must be numbers or letters.

Yes, if the hyphens are not in the third and forth or first or last postion. This example is in the second and third position which should be allowed at any registrar.

Can I ask WHY on earth someone would do this?
It has absolutely no SEO benefits and people definitely don't type --

There is also the case of Multilindual domain names or IDNs where the ASCII representation of domain name with Unicode signs (ą, ę, ł, é, etc.) has two hyphens also on 3rd and 4th positions: i.e. 'café' is represented in ASCII as 'xn--caf-dma'.
i-Nav browser plugin translates such names.

Very True, and neither can you start with "--" or end with "--".

Hyphens are really a tough thing to negotiate in seo applications. Sometimes I think they are your friends, but rarely are many names worth very much that contain them.
