Hi there,

I sold a name on ebay last week and the guy has never regged a domain with 1and1 and so doesnt have an account. Is he able to join 1and1 without buying a domain as there is no option for this?

Thanks in advance

if you push a name to another 1+1 account, there will be a $5.99 charge to you.
read the 1+1 threads about the 1+1 nightmare.
you can transfer a domain to another registrar but the buyer will need to pay the add 1 year transfer fee to the new registrar.

All I can say is call their 800 number and speak with someone on the phone to do the transfer as my experience with their email support was less than desirable. :imho:

last time when I asked them, here is the reply:

Thank you for contacting 1&1 Internet.

No, it doesn't cost anything to change the ownership
of your account.

If you have any further questions, please do not
hesitate to contact us.

To answer your question, I believe he will have to register a domain name. If you have no choice but to go with 1&1, tell the person to register buying a free .info fromain from 1&1. That would be the most logical way to go, plus, he gets a free .info domain.

Steve :)

I would never buy from 1and1 even though their hosting is partly good.

I bought 9 names with them awhile back when I was checking out different registrars. Strengths and weaknesses, but mostly weaknesses right now. They're growing fast and are getting a LOT of complaints, so doubtless are trying to figure how to make things better...
But they're still looking pretty bad - they do everything WONDERFULLY to make it easier for you to buy names from them... and they do everything TERRIBLY to make it easy for you to manage, sell, push, transfer your names.
Customer support via email is so slow and unhelpful as to be regarded as entirely useless, definitely only use the 800 number and talk to a (allegedly) live human.

Funny, I went there initially with the intent to buy some names, so didn't even pay attention to the fact that there's no place to sign up for free... far as I can tell, you gotta buy a name.
If that scares your buyer away, offer to paypal him/her the amount of whatever name they buy at 1and1 - this is assuming you're selling your name for a decent enough $ to make this worth your while.
Whether they go for the free dot.info domain to sign up - assuming 1and1 lets them do that without buying a non-free item first - or any other dot.ext, I'd personally suggest they register a stupid name that they have no intention of using or selling, unless they want to keep it forever with 1and1; that way they can just let the name lapse into the great void at drop time, and never have to deal further with trying to manage/push/sell the name - at least until 1&1 starts getting their act together and making services better for domainers.

1and1 do have the nicest, and most versatile, starter pages of any registrar I've ever seen; extremely user-friendly to build (if you have a certain amount of computer experience) and a lot of very versatile options, at least for a starter page. But pretty starter pages don't make up for their huge lackings in other areas...
Wanted to say all this so your buyer doesn't get sucked into using 1and1 seriously without at least knowing some things about them.

I know that with dotster you can register there without buying a domain name. So, you could transfer to dotster without a charge.

The only way I've had success in transferring the name is when Sedo is involved, since they work with 1and1.com, but even then, every one has been a major bear to get to the guy buying it. I don't buy names at 1and1.com, but still have a few left over from the free info giveaway that I didn't get a chance to transfer.

I have a current sale pending through Sedo that seems to be caught up in this craziness, although it may be the guy just hasn't tried transferring it yet. Still trying to work it out with Sedo. It's paid, so that's not the problem.

The best advice, stay away from 1and1.com for registering domains.

Actually, I believe you can register up to 5 .info domains with 1and1 for free, without having to buy any .coms. So in reality, your buyer could open an account by ordering 5 .infos for free. I have 100+ names with 1+1, had no problems so far, though I am wary after reading all the nightmare threads.

I have to admit, i kind of hate 1&1, its the worst domain reg i yet to seen, though i supply fre .info, its only because they're losing people, and everyone is spreading all over the forums to stay away from 1&1.

Don't count on that because this person has to give out their credit card number.

The best thing perhaps to do is to Change Providers on 1and1.com, go through their hoops. Transfer the domain to another registrar and transfer it to the person from there. Might take a week or so though...

so now you know: 1+1 is rubbish.

even letting a domain drop or transferring to another registrar is like rolling around in liquid manure........................
