I have heard a lot of nightmares with them. Indeed, so many nightmares i have heard, that their image is already equal to the once registrar from hell registerfly in my mind. I will pass.

I totally agree with you, I went thru massive hell with registerfly back in the day and I have heard the same nightmares repeating again with 1and1

AVOID 1&1. For more details why, search past posts on here regarding them.

If they were offering 10 free domains I still wouldn't bite. They are shady and have to pay for all those multi-page magazine ads somehow.

Beware of Trojan Registrars bearing gifts.

I just have one domain name with 1and1, I HATE their control panel, NO full DNS control, I don't recommend them for domain registering!

Once I have tried to register a domain name, when I asked about their support , here's the email what I got from them.

Dear ......................

Thank you for contacting us.

The reason why you can not login to your 1&1 control panel is because we
are still processing the purchase of your account here in our end. Since
you are worldwide customer
, the purchase process will be finished
approximately 10 days
from the day you initiated the purchase of your
account. Thank you for your patience on this concern.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

I used to use them & defended them as I had no real trouble with them. However compared to other registrars I use, I could not recommend them in good faith to even my enemy.

It helps reading the fine print.

"* Offers valid for a limited time only. “12 Months Free” offers valid with a 24 month minimum contract term only. "3 Months Free" and "3 Months 50%" offer valid with a 12 month minimum contract term only. Setup fee and other terms and conditions may apply."

I can offer "free" .com registration for 1 year, but you need to register the domain for at least 2 years and I simply charge $20 for the second year.

Hosts that register the domain for you sometimes list themselves as the owner and sometimes state in their policy a minimum amount of time you must be hosted with them in order to transfer the domain to another registrar, extra transfer fees, etc.

To avoid any unecessary surpises, you should always keep your host and your registrar separate.

I agree, I also have had problems with 1and1 - actually had a debt collection agency contact me as I hadnt paid the auto-recurring renewal fee on my hosting, even though I had cancelled it! Their support wasnt great and the control pannel shocking.

If your just starting out with and want a very basic host they are cheap but I wouldnt go near them!
