How should I spend it?

Multiple domains, or one higher traffic one?

How much of the 1k should go to the domain itself?

All of it. Dig around on BuyDomains, you can get a pretty decent domain there for $1000, if you bargain right.

Do you have other domains in your portfolio yet? If so, then buy one really nice domain with good traffic. Otherwise, I would spend about $250 each on four very carefully researched names.

None of the domains I own are worth anything.

Define very carefully researched please.

Well, you want to be sure that the traffic is legit, as well as the page rank. You also want to pay attention to the Alexa. As far as the name itself, you want to make sure that it's something that's going to STICK and isn't just a fad-for example, check the value of the keywords (PPC average, which is pay-per-click) etc. Know what's hot, and will continue to be like anything to do with recycling, energy sources, financial terms, adult, etc. Make sure the keywords and tld blend well. Not to mention checking the frequency of the keywords coming up in searches. This is just a sampling of things to think about before buying and I'm sure there will be others that are more experienced than I that can give you even more of an explanation as to what to look for.

Good luck!

Edit: I almost forgot to mention that you should avoid anything that may be trademarked. You can check that here: Trademarks and use Google to see how the other tlds of whichever names you choose are being used.

I say treat yourself. Go out and buy yourself and your date a nice dinner, go to a movie, and then spend about $250 on domain names. Finally, put the rest of your money to your bank account and use it for emergency (such as renewal fees or a domain that you might want to buy in the future). Cheers.

Take your time.

Put research into your decisions.

Assume that you are going to pay at least 2 years renewal fees on each domain you buy.

There are two currencies in domaining---
Time and money.

The more you know the better you can spend your money, however much you have. That takes time, reading through this forum will get you a lot of it, studying sales results to get the feel of what makes a domain valuable, researching what is available. The number of options that you have when buying is nearly infinite and each has its' own specific qualitiies.

And if you want to spend hours on each $7 reg you can make a higher ROI than the big spenders, IMHO.
