Has anyone seen a domain set to expire in ~100 years time? I noticed that Network Solutions offer renewals for 100 years.

Not yet, but I was thinking of the possibility earlier this morning.

It would be of great benefit to huge companies like Amazon or Ebay, but not much use for us domainers lol

wonder how much they have to pay for 100 Years!

$9.95 x 100 years = $995

Hello,

As far as I am aware, they renew it up to the maximum (10 years I think) and then it gets renewed subsequently to keep it updated.

So there won't be any domains out there that are marked 100 years in advance viewable on the WHOIS.

Found this on their website:

Network Solutions will register your domain name for the maximum term available at the underlying domain registry and will add additional years to that registration on an annual basis.

Lock in your domain registration for our lowest price available - just $9.99 a year.

The pre-paid 100 Year Domain Service will terminate upon any transfer of your domain name to another registrar, with no refunds.

i am sure no one yet registered a domain for 100 years
but if i do someday, i will ask the registrar to advertise my name and my domain on their home page for few days.

But what about 2012!?!?!

My thoughts exactly. I think NetSol should offer a refund in the event the World ends in 2012. IMO.

I can accept good generic domains with traffic from corps who say in 2012 it's over as a gift.

I guess paying for 100 years on a domain, is a good way for the registrar to get money on something they will never have to fully deliver...

Some ccTLDs have offered true 100 year registrations - as in the expiration date actually is 100 years into the future.

The Network Solutions 100 year registration for gTLDs, such as .com, is not truly 100 years, but rather a maximum of 10 years to start, and then renewed automatically annually for the remaining 90 years.

For some, it may be worthwhile, but there are risks with Network Solutions 100 year registration, such as, if they declare bankruptcy - in which case, the automatic renewals would likely stop.

But 100 years from now there won't even be computers or an internet; there'll be compuchips embedded in our brains, we'll see the 'screen' on the inside of our eye corneas as clearly as we see anything else, there won't be a web because all knowledge will be linked organically within our minds/chips and when we think of something we need the image and knowledge will appear instantly...

Excuse me, I deviate. Of course, the internet will be pretty much the same in 100 years as it is now, right? Domain names, plonking away at a keyboard, and all?

Feud for thought :)

How much

If you stop and think about it for a minute you would realise that the chance of any business today, including network solutions for that matter, would most likely not even exist in 100 years.

Sound weird?

Do some research and you will find very few companies operating today that are 100 years ago.

That reminds me, I still have a 100-year warranty on my 8-track player.
