In March 1992 a man living in Newtown near Boston Massachusetts received
a bill for his as yet unused credit card stating that he owed $0.00. He
ignored it and threw it away.
In April he received another and threw that one away too. The
following month the credit card company sent him a very nasty note stating
they were going to cancel his card if he didn't send them $0.00 by return
of post. He called them, talked to them, they said it was a computer error
and told him they'd take care of it.
The following month he decided that it was about time that he tried out
the troublesome credit card figuring that if there were purchases on his
account it would put an end to his ridiculous predicament. However, in
the first store that he produced his credit card in payment for his
purchases he found that his card had been cancelled. He called the credit
card company who apologized for the computer error once again and said
that they would take care of it.
The next day he got a bill for $0.00 stating that payment was now
overdue. Assuming that having spoken to the credit card company only the
previous day the latest bill was yet another mistake he ignored it,
trusting that the company would be as good as their word and sort the
problem out.
The next month he got a bill for $0.00 stating that he had 10 days to
pay his account or the company would have to take steps to recover the
debt.
Finally giving in he thought he would play the company at their own game
and mailed them a check for $0.00. The computer duly processed his
account and returned a statement to the effect that he now owed the credit
card company nothing at all. A week later, the man's bank called him
asking him what he was doing writing a check for $0.00. After a lengthy
explanation the bank replied that the $0.00 check had caused their heck
processing software to fail. The bank could not now process ANY checks
from ANY of their customers that day because the check for $0.00 was
causing the computer to crash.
The following month the man received a letter from the credit card
company claiming that his check had bounced and that he now owed them
$0.00 and unless he sent a check by return of post they would be taking
steps to recover the debt.
The man, who had been considering buying his wife a computer for her
birthday, bought her a typewriter instead.

I had a vaguly similar problem..

Back in 1990, I was working for a manufacturer, got paid every 2 weeks by mail.. well their computer went down and they could not send the checks out.. so they hand wrote checks for the whole company and gave them to us.. then about 3 weeks later I got 2 checks. 1 for my normal pay for the 2 weeks, and for the previous (handwritten one) a $0.01 check. I thought it was funny, and found out they needed to send those out to keep the checks in line.. even though it cost them to print out several hundred penny checks..

well I kept it for show.. then 3 months later, I get a call saying I had to cash that check or their stuff would never tally right, and they WOULD hold it against me. so, not having a bank account at the time, went to supermarket to cash the check... was told it was going to cost me $1.00 to cash anything under $100.00 checks. so now, to make their system happy, they were gonna cost me 100 TIMES the amount of a check in cashing fees..

sigh...

Huh???? Surely the tale was one of irony?

Beaurocracy and red tape really do give me a chuckle. I remember one time, i was manager of a depot of this chain of rental companies. Anyway, the HQ had a real penchant for paperwork, memos, hardcopy and the like - almost as though the telephone had been de-invented and we had nothing else to do all day...

They wanted hard copy, paper format returns (instead of anything computer orientated) and wanted them almost every day. All these 'memos' came from this 'marketing department', so one day i hatched upon the idea of forging one of their memos and sending it to all the other depots in the company. The memo i sent them was one that said "could you send in every friday a memo stating how many memos you had already replied to that week" - and i included in with the memo a little table in which to fill in. Now i thought this was the ultimate ironic joke and one which i thought all the other managers would straight away realise that this was in fact a gag. Anyway, they didnt! They completed this form every single week and then it was me who got singled out at the national managers meeting for having returned poor paperwork, this paedantic little s* from the 'marketing dept' standing there chastising me and citing the very memo (i had sent out) as an example of something to which i had never complied to....

Now THATS ironic...

a few years ago I owed the council ยฃ1 in unpaid council tax bills which I was unaware of I then got a sheriff's letter hand delivered to me at the cost of probably ยฃ25 for the letter plus whatever fees the sherrif's court take for it.

The sherrif's letter threratened that if it was not paid they would come round and seize items to the value of what was owed. I was tempted to wait and give them the ยฃ1 on the day however I phoned the council up and they claimed it was a computer error, anything under ยฃ10 i think they stated ussually gets written off.

An expensive way for the council to write off ยฃ1
