I was always wondering how you can get your own TLD. For example I want a domain extension like .vz, what would I need to make something possible. If anyone has any suggestions please post here, I would like to know how it can be done. Thanks. :music:

Currently, ICANN (icann.org) is not taking new TLD applications. Even if they were, it would require lots of cash (a few hundred thousand dollars to start), a viable business plan, and demonstrated technical know-how.

If you had the money, and can't wait, then your best bet would probably be to simply buy the rights from some small country.

Yeah good point there armstrong, what website do you think I could go to for information about buying rights for domains and things like that. Thanks again for the previous info.

Armstong's answer are correct. It would cost you at least 6-7 non-refundable figures to take a chance on your own domain tld with ICANN.

There has been a company operating trying to sell you any tld you want. However, it's all smoke and mirrors as they are not recognized by ICANN and would not be viewable by anyone in the normal manner. I think maybe they have a plugin like new.net domains to let people you know access them IF they install the software. More like an intranet than the internet.

Ah I think I get you better now, but then that would be a drag for people wouldn't it?

Last time I checked it used to cost $500,000 to get your own tld and about $100,000 to become a registar if you wanted to

2 letter TLDs are reserved for countries, so that means you need to start your own country :D
But 3 or more letter TLDs can be awarded by ICANN when something like this is going on: http://www.icann.org/announcements/announcement-15dec03.htm .
You need only 45.000$ to make application.
And a few million $ for the rest...

If I were todo this, I'd go find a country and change its name to Saxony and bat for a .sx extension. Or maybe Xerxia and then I'd have .xx.
