I was thinking about something this morning that I figured other people have probably pondered as well and that may make for a good debate topic:

If you are a domain investor with a domain marketplace website and you are reaching out to owners of domains you wish to buy do you:

A) feel it is kosher to email owners of domains you wish to buy from an email address they wouldn't be able to tell your true identity from.

or do you

B) feel it is best to email them from your marketplace domain email address so they know who you are and so you aren't hiding anything.

please feel free to chime in with your opinions on this topic!

I''ll choose B , I have a marketplace domain myself and that is what I use to contact potential buyers.

@jstenn13 - is contacting sellers he wishes to buy domains from. He's not trying to contact potential buyers.

I'd always go for option A). The less a seller knows about your business, the better it is for you.

so far two responses, one choosing A and one choosing B. Anybody else care to share their thoughts?

I now think it's best not to hide your identity. It worked well for me being straight forward.
This wasn't always my stand.

I think the "better option" depends.

While anonymity can help get a better price, it can also lead a seller's imagination to run wild, since "it could be anyone".

But there's no doubt that Elon Musk for example would get a better deal buying a domain anonymously or via a surrogate than by using his official Tesla email.

If you're obviously buying a domain to resell, the seller may assume that you're lowballing... but at least maybe they won't imagine a billion dollar company on the other end...

There's a reason the "poor student" story is so popular....

what made you change?
I wanted a very good name for my business from a domain name investor/company and I introduced myself as a domainer and briefly shared my goals...I didn't even expect a reply or having a chance..

But to my surprise, the seller responded favorably saying, "thanks for your straightforwardness in saying you are a domainer."

I was able to acquire a name that would otherwise be worth much much more...
I guess I was frustrated so I just told the truth- what do I have to lose telling the truth?

Before that I would maybe act undercover, pretending maybe to be clueless about domains...or a poor blogger. I really didn't have big bucks but also wasn't fully transparent.
It could work against you because, the seller won't easily give deals if you are unknown or they may suspect you are hiding something and could be a big company or something.

In the past, I remember giving deals myself, to startups that were straightforward with me..They were telling the truth because they have live sites up now..doing exactly what they told me: ClassTag.com and Classbook.org are examples. I won't give away a domain just because someone is a domainer or new startup but I won't be asking an arm and a leg for it either..#reasonable

It may only make sense to hide if you area big company as stated in the comment above mine.

I think you wouldn't want to hide your identity in this case.

Option A.
There is no reason to feel deceitful.
