I'm going to share an inquiry I received yesterday on one of my smaller domains. I think it's hilarious.

The domain is a short two-word .org that I'm liquidating at $548. It used to be priced at $1,000 or so, but I renewed the name in April and priced to sell. The domain is currently listed on my website with the BIN price (MakeOffer option disabled).

The buyer approached via a Live Chat, and we continued the correspondence over the email.

BUYER:
Hello, how are you? Im ready to buy this domain name, wordword.org for 200 usd, not more. Would you be interested in such an incredible opportunity?

ME:
Hey! $400 and you have a deal. Sounds good?

Having received no response in the chat window, I quickly followed-up via the email. The buyer has shown some sense of humour (as I thought back then :xf.laugh:), so I wanted to sound friendly too.

ME:
Thanks for reaching out via the Live Chat with such an incredible offer :)
If you could double that amount, we could make a deal. Let me know.

BUYER:
Hello,

thank you for holding on.

As I see that you are lowering the price, I will propose 150 USD as
it's obvious the offer displayed on the parking page as no value. I
think it will be fair for a domain worth 12 USD to be paid that price.

Is this still of interrest to you ? But don't forget, You'll Have to
Hurry Up because I may find a very cheap alternative by simply getting
a very nice domain also with one of these new extensions that are
available on the market. I think you'll have to think twice before
loosing a very good potential customer as myself.

I await you answer.

Honestly, I was in the middle of something else (and it's not a valuable domain by any stretch), so I wasn't very attentive. I didn't even notice immediately that the guy reduced his initial offer! :xf.eek:

Skimming thru his response I saw that stupid $12 value mention and decided it's not worth my time – I mean, I might have engaged with him if that was a four-figure domain name, but this was not the case here, so I responded:

ME:
Thank you for your offer, but I will have to pass.

BUYER:
It hasn't found any buyer for at least two years as I've seen on stats
for it. I really think you should better think twice before loosing a
very precious exceptionnal potential buyer.

Get back to me once you have though about it.

Regards,
[buyer's name]

Really?? :ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

The guy seems to believe in what he was saying. Unf*king believable if you ask me. :banghead:

My last response to him was a no-so-polite "Take it or leave it" email with a 24hr deadline (not gonna post it here). I also increased the price for the domain to $899 because I was pissed with such ignorance.

What were your very precious exceptional buyers lately? :xf.wink:

Entertaining, to say the least. I wouldn't have been as polite as you were. :xf.wink:

Do you think if you were firm about the price it would have changed anything?

This is common. Especially this year for some reason. Some are more entertaining than others. Everyone wants something for nothing but in the end I cant blame them because I do as well. Its all a game, a dance. My favorite ones are the ones who tell me there is no value in the domain they're interested in and my reply is "then why do you want it?" essentially stop wasting everyone's time.

All you can do is stand firm on what the value of your name is, if its generic there will be other leads making inquiries. But dont waste too much time.

With this kind of buyer, I have no clue.

For a domain like this, my reply usually depends on a mood (although it shouldn’t) — I think I would have just said NO on the very first offer from this buyer but I have to admit I somewhat liked the humorous wording (incredible offer)

I fully agree. Just thought it was really funny and kinda unusual that’s why I posted it here. Otherwise nothing interesting in terms of both asking price and buyers offer.

What I find more worrying is that I started having no responses on my counter offers.

Only in the last couple of months I had two legit inquiries on the domains that were priced at 7,688 and 8,999 — both buyers made initial offers equal to around 50% of my asking price and both didn’t bother reply to my “soft” counters, zero responses from my follow-ups too. :xf.frown:

My last one was not as polite as other emails, but also not as harsh as it would been if I was sending from my private email 😉

Yeah, this happens. Well, if they are actively tracking the domain, via whois, I'd renew it for at least 5 years after such (unsuccessful) negotiations. At least they would stop thinking that it may drop tomorrow...

Agree, but not for this particular scenario.

I intentionally put more details about the domain name to make it clear it’s not worth such renewals. 🙂 I even added a comment for the domain in my spreadsheet “Renew once”. I was going to drop it next year regardless.
