How do you determine the age of a domain? By when it first register or by the date you register?

For example, I have a domain that was registered 16 years ago. But I got it last night after it dropped.

So, is the domain 16yrs old or 1age day old?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
1 day old. but don't lose hope. got to Ahrefs.com and have a look at it's score.

you might get lucky and have a domain with SEO value. aka a ton of backlinks or just some.

hopefully it's not blacklisted.

could always try and sell it back to the prior owner for quick profits.

Your domain was born 16 years ago (in the logs of the registry-archive, and noted by google)
Your domain is 1 day old (in the logs of registrar, registry, and domainers and noted by google)

I use Nameinvestors (.)com -Shows updated;

DomainTools is also popular look up WHOis

You need to look up their WHOis.

Resets if dropped; like if caught by DropCatch.

16 year old domain. Expires. you reg it. at first glance Zero value because age resets to zero day 1.

but................

if domain was once developed? has 2000+ backlinks or even 500? expire or delete does not matter. Still valuable.

just make sure it's has not be blacklisted.

Generally I think it does’t matter for domainers and mid-large size companies who want the specific domain, but it matter for new end users don’t understand it, at least they will know how to use Whois.

Whois for official age but older names may have some further evidence on archive.org to show history.
Have a few sites for that.
