Let's contribute $1 per domain owned towards Class Action Lawsuit Against ICANN.

Do you agree?
How many domains do you own and how many dollars can you contribute?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I don't think this will work.
COM's price increase is based on the existing prices of other TLDs. They are fully capable of judging the advantages and disadvantages of the price increase, and just make choices based on their needs.

There is no guarantee but it is a great way to defend our interest.

Uncapped .org price... non-profit .org to to -profit private equity, lifted price cap

7% com hikes, each of the next 4 years. Finally put .com contract to tender?

always cries "broke" yet most lucrative contract

There is a lot of evidence suggesting that ICANN may be corrupted. It would also make sense to investigate this in one way or another. Such a professiosnal investigation may need funding (or, at least, a campaign to start it may need funding). I'd also donate something to this...

Konstantions from onlinedomain wrote a great article. ICANN simply does not serve public interest anymore. A lawsuit (if alone) should at least force them to start open bidding process to run legacy extensions.

Dissolving ICANN would also be great. They cannot be "fixed". It is too late. Whether this can be done using class action lawsuit is a question that still needs an answer from a professional lawyer.

Save money 2023 when .com contract expires. Take the loss, and live to fight another day.

Stop com contract extensions; next 1 probably; 10 years, ten 7% hikes; they’re getting bolder!

As for donating, I'll be happy to donate some 4-figures amount. Also, running a charity aftermarket domain auction (with all proceedings going directly to fund this initiative) may make sense. I'll donate some domains that can be easily sold for at least 4 figures each. It is a somewhat exotic idea, but, why not? A domainer may not have available funds, but we all have domains. Maybe afternic @Joe Styler or Epik @Rob Monster can provide an auction platform to collect more funds?

In my case, it would be some 4 figures. I'd suggest that each domainer donates any amount he can. Even HugeDomains :) They may be able to donate a lot more $$$ (per domain they own). A small domainer with a few hundreds of domains may be able donate only $100 - let it be so...

Check for lawsuits against icann in the past. Icann always win.

To be fair, sue based on what? That they increased the price of something they own?

Didn't we have a poll here where most people answered they increased their domain prices in 2020?

I don't see a case or argument here.

Prices need to go down, not up.

I don’t think ICANN understands who ICANN is?

To OP Class actions are complicated, and you have to establish a minimum damage amount, and someone has to be lead plaintiff.

Will Huge Domains donate $6.5M, probably not, but I am sure they have been lobbying, and if verisign did it with $20M, maybe they should have offered more as they are going to feel it, especially in a tough economy, so I don’t get why they are blowing all their profits on godaddy right now, paying $200 for random names their bot gets bid up on.

Are you sure you understand what ICANN is?

I understand that ICANN is a non-profit org that oversees TLDs but on the basis of what would you sue them? That they're being poopie heads for raising the prices?

If there's concrete evidence that they are corrupt, it needs to be laid out. When you're working together towards a cause, there needs to be a plan. You can't just say "let's sue these assholes, I don't like their prices!"

The price increase is not the main problem here, it might even be justified if people had all the information as to whether the price increase was going to be absolutely necessary for keeping the Internet addressing and naming system and the Registrants safe and secure or whether it's going to line the pockets of certain insider people and their friends and create a more lavish lifestyle for the top people at ICANN and Verisign, the real problem is:

Lack of Transparency

Why didn't they put a mechanism in place in the original contract to account for the almost doubling of the number of .com registrations in the last few years.

Why didn't they put a mechanism in place in the original contract to account for the better and more advanced technologies such as AI that can help the registry to operate at a fraction of the cost of what it took to do the same job a few years ago.

Why are previous and even present members of ICANN allowed to advocate and lobby for the Registries instead of the Registrants, and why do so many of them even hold positions or own stocks in various Registries.

Why does ICANN refuse to be open about it's operations to the point that even the Stakeholders and Watchdog groups that have been given the authority to oversee the whole Internet naming and addressing system are denied to have access to the information regarding certain programs and decisions that ICANN even went to court to withhold from them.

Price increases are just the symptoms, the real disease is the lack of transparency that is designed to protect all the ICANN insiders and their friends.

Transparency is what is needed.

IMO
